First off I'd like to say if I put this in the wrong place I'm sorry and if it needs moving could a mod please do it, thank you

I'm looking for some advice, I like lot's of different types of games, I enjoy RPG's mostly and I also love my dungeon crawlers, I don't generally play PvP's or anything like that. I however have a little brother who LOVES Super Smash Bro's and I want to be able to play with him as he's no one to play with and I want to big cool older brother.

Is there any advice that you could think of to help, I am trying to understand the spirit board as that's what he's playing mostly and I've gotten the hang of Squirtle beats Charmander who beat Bulbasaur who beats... and Mewtwo has no advantage or disadvantage *I don't mean this as the actually Pokemon just easy way to remember shield/Attack/Grab/Neutral). thought getting completely lost in regards Support Spirits and such. just wondering if anyone has any advice or can point towards a good starter guide to help me getting started with this game.

Thanks

Well in general , SSBU is more of a multiple players games, so playing against him in Smash that is normal, if you can get more people to play along with you guys that would be nice.

if you want to play with him, you don't need the spirits at all.
actually, using spirits in multiplayer is kind of a hassle.

as for the single player campaign, there's a button to autoselect suitable spirits, that's gonna work 99% of the time.

you can also play classic smash as a team btw

Well at the moment we are playing spirit board so more of a "we" against the switch. plus he's seven, other than against me no one else here to play and if someone likes smash than probably crush us both if we had online.

Maybe but he's seven so the multiplayer not really a thing ^^, I'm just wondering how exactly they affect, is there anything I should aim to do, any particular Spirits I should get, any that make it easier? that kind of thing, I plan to play a good run as see if I can figure it out later with single player. I've been using Auto-Select so far but just wondering if I'm hindering myself not knowing, after all I figured out the Attack/Grab/Defend thing but we haven't got a defend one yet so wondering how "much" exactly advantage or disadvantage is, I'm sadly a complete noob in regards this game XD

Every spirit battle in the game is different and the amount of spirits you have at your disposal is also always going to change. With Auto-Select, the game picks a Primary Spirit that is usually around the power level of the Spirit you are fighting then equips Secondary Spirits depending on the enemy's conditions. For example, if there is a Lava Field, Auto-Select will give you a spirit with Lava Field immunity if you have one and enough space (they are usually two slots). However Auto-Select is not always optimized. Taking the same example of Lava Field, if the Spirit you are fighting is on Battlefield, its possible to fight this Spirit without the immunity if you stick to fighting on the platforms. This means you can use those two slots to fill up with something that might better help you win like Physical Attack Up. I should also mention that the higher the rank of the Spirit, the more it adds to your Power Level. This is why sometimes it might not be best to stack 3 Stamina Up Spirits in a Stamina Battle; if the enemy is giant/metal, it would be more optimal to equip a giant/metal killer Spirit.

The real beauty here is that there is no right way to win these battles. Heck, people have done the Adventure Mode spirit-less so you shouldn't need to fret about not optimizing your Spirits. High-level Spirit utilization is only going to come after hours and hours of testing the various spirits, finding out what the various enemy conditions are, and realizing what works best with your play style. Starting out, you should definitely utilize the Auto-Select feature so you know what to use in certain situations. Even once you master Spirits, its still a useful feature for not having to scroll through the hundreds of Spirits you can collect in-game.

Thank you lots to mull over there, thank you, we seem to have gotten the char of Kirby as our favorite so that's who we are using. I was wondering when we went up against a metal Mario and didn't do any damage to them at all, we need to get a metal killer spirit, good to know, any issue like that we should avoid too? yup been using the auto-select, I figured there was no way to get it wrong.

Also about the spinning Circle thing is there any way to making that easier? like higher battle advantage or winning with being hit less? also how does the damage work (I'm embarrassed admitting this) but I've no idea how it works, I'm just trying to knock them off/keep hitting till they hit the screen (which is really funny) XD

In the beginning of the game, you don't have a lot or any Spirits to pick from so its down to more skill than choosing the right Spirits.

What spinning circle thing? Do you mean the Smash Ball?

I can explain Damage though. Unlike traditional fighting games, Smash doesn't use a health bar; instead it tracks all of the damage you take. The traditional aim of the game is to Smash your opponent hard enough that they fly off-screen which results in a KO although you also die if you fall off stage. The more damage a character has, the farther they fly when hit by the next attack. The general strategy is build up as much damage on them as possible then once you think they have enough damage, you hit them with one of your more powerful attacks known as "Smash Attacks". These are executed by tapping the Analog Stick in a direction then pressing or holding the A button. Keep in mind that these attacks are regarded as the slowest out of all attacks so landing them is not easy.

Yeah I figured that out, as I said just started playing this evening and trying to figure it out. the spinning circle thing that has the spirit in it, it might be the smash ball I don't know the name. at the moment we just trying to get the ones he likes and it seems to be entertaining the same way as Pokemon at the moment ^^, Ah that makes sooooo much sense thank you! so to use an example to see if I understand, If I (as Kirby) and up against CPU (Mario) ever time I hit Mario his damage goes up by 1% (pulling number out of air) and if I hit with my mallet the more % by his name the further he flies? yup that's why I figured it was the mallet as appose to say turning into a rock, also may I ask are stamina matches kinda the opposite? as I noticed in those the damage % went down as we hit and got hit and I think I won as it hit zero on the inkling? and btw thank you so much this really helping ^^,

Stamina matches are closer to the traditional fighting game style in that you both have a health bar but its not a bar and you can actually see how much health points you have. It wasn't in the original Smash Bros. but it was introduced in the sequel, Super Smash Bros. Melee. Another thing to note with Stamina Mode is that since all moves send you the same distance regardless of how much damage you have taken or left over. In normal Smash, the more damage you have would make you launch farther and farther but in Stamina Mode, everything launches you at a set distance which would depend upon the move. Stronger moves will send you farther in Stamina Mode but usually not enough that you fly off-screen.

Ah OK, so in normal % = damage received and goes up, and the further a "smash" sends you flying. stamina health bars are the Percentage you see and it goes down. "smashing" the CPU's off screen isn't much use as there is a set distance to fly. that perfect sense. I never plays Smash Bro or Super Smash Bros. melee so all new.

As for the spirit board, I would really suggest you go and play more world of light first.
It's kind of build with progression in mind so you start off with rather weak enemies and easy conditions to collect different spirits and eventually things get a little harder. Unlike on the spirit board, you also have a difficulty setting if things ever get too hard for your brother. it's probably better to just grind a hard battle on normal and get better over time, but if frustration gets too much, easy is always an option.
and after an hour or two in world of light, you'll have much better chances on the spirit board too, since you'll have a lot of spirits for the right occasion.

for the time being, avoid the legendary spirits. they're often really hard or have very harsh conditions even when you've been playing for a good while already.

Thank you I'm watching through the series now, thank you for this, plenty to learn yet.

Thank you, all your help was incredible, explaining the smash and health system was so "game-changing", a single clue that stepped up my game from clueless nut to just bad player, thank you sooooo much!!
