GBATemp was never that bad in the first place, places like IGN, Polygon, The Verge, etc all have garbage moderation/rules.

It was a joke. However much like most jokes there could well be an element of reality to it -- given the sorts of things I am seeing bans for there I could well imagine them blacklisting those that posted in gamergate, https://gbatemp.net/threads/mass-tagging-reddit-users-what-are-your-thoughts.517978/ or similar prior to even joining -- blocklists and blacklists of people being a rather popular concept in such circles.
If you have to fake being someone else to even join then arguably you have already won the contest/gotten yourself a perfect score.
