My curiosity was peaked on how far you can get away with having NSP content installed while online. This might just be common knowledge and I'm just ignorant enough to not google it, but I did it anyway.

DISCLAIMER: I did this on 4 "broken yet playable" Switch models I bought from Ebay(e.i. broken screen so only docked, unable to accept joycons so only wired controller, etc.) so your mileage may vary. I did not restore any of the firmwares on the Switch consoles. When a console was banned, I went to the next one. So, do not try any of this if you have even a shred of doubt you may get banned.

Games Used: Fortnite, Splatoon 2 Physical, and Dead Cells NSP.

First attempt: Booted into CFW with no airplane mode, Installing NSP through Tinfoil, played NSP, Fortnite, Unable to start application. Loss to Eshop. Ban.

Second Attempt: Airplane mode while in CFW, installing NSP, then switching airplane mode off, played Fortnite, played NSP, played Splatoon 2. Error. Can still access Eshop, online gameplay is inhibited. I considered this a "ban"

Third Attempt: Airplane mode while in CFW, installed NSP, played Splatoon 2, airplane mode off, played NSP, Played Fortnite, then Splatoon 2 again. Error. "Ban."

Fourth Attempt: Airplane Mode CFW, Install NSP, Fortnite, Splatoon 2, NSP, airplane mode off, Splatoon 2, Fortnite, Console Off, CFW Airplane mode on, NSP, Airplane off, Splatoon 2, Fortnite, left Switch on to see if autoban after some time.

I've started this Monday, August 6th and the fourth Switch has yet to be banned as long as the Tinfoil installed game is run on Airplane Mode. I have yet to see if Switch is banned after some time with a Tinfoil installed NSP. If you're afraid to get banned I would recommend an exclusive Airplane Mode only Switch consoles. I did this as an experiment to see what I could get away with as I like playing online with my Switch.

Edit: 4th Switch is now banned. Woke up this morning and started playing Splatoon 2 and downloaded Paladins to use more varied games to mess around with and received an error code 2124-4007. Ban.

That´s some pretty interesting testing you did there (although i can see salty comments incoming in 3..2..1..). I got some questions:

@1st attempt: Does that mean you had the switch connected to the internet (airplane off) while you just used tinfoil for installing and this resulted in an account instaban? Or did you actually started the installed nsp and THEN the ban appeared?

@3rd attempt: At which point here did you turn off the airplane mode?

Attempt Nr.4 is pretty much what i do for about a month now, i only use sxos in airplane mode except for updating my nsp games (yes, i do this via wifi in sxos!) or when i start mariokart xci which i got from my own cart to play online (yes, online play with xci+cert from sd). No ban so far, i can even connect to eShop from sxos (and i do this every other day to check if i´m banned or not )

First attempt was indeed with no airplane mode on. Just pretty much trying to get banned. I indeed started the app.

Third was right after Splatoon 2 for the first time.

Thanks for doing this. This is something that has been interesting me for a few days. It's interesting that attempt #4 hasn't caused a ban. I think I read that some people got banned recreating the same circumstances and even uninstalling the nsp before going online.

I know that the nsp traces hang around in your logs after being uninstalled. I also wonder where else there may be remnants, so that maybe someone can work on hb that searches for invalid app ID and clears the necessary data.

I'm not surprised that 1-3 caused bans. Given the whole verification process that goes on when you boot up a game whilst connected to a network.

As for the fourth attempt? Who knows. Maybe a staggered ban. Or Inc in the next "ban wave". As far as I know, actions like wiping your errors didn't cause an instant ban and they were eventually looked at days later.

I'm surprised no one hasn't requested all of their info from Nintendo to see what they actually store/they received (or as much as the GDPR would allow). Would help out with stuff like this.

Two things:

Can you also submit the data you collected over in this thread? I admire the effort you put in but threads like these can get buried within a day or two, especially in this subfourm. I linked you to a pinned thread making it easy to access for everyone and ensures it won't be easily forgotten. Secondly:

What was the error code you received here? It seems like your ability to play certain NSPs was banned here. If so, I have an interesting experiment I would like you to conduct to circumvent the ban.

In my view, it was the fact of NPS installations via tinfoil that made the flag for the ban. For those who use SX OS, only offline and play online with the original cards, I think it is safer to prevent the ban. making XCI update on OFW.

Doubt it, I too have been experimenting ever since sigpatches or whatever was released, I've installed many nsp files with tinfoil and dev menu. I've installed many game updates from Nintendo's servers. I've had my switch connected to the internet multiple times for long lengths of time. I haven't played any games online nor have I opened the eshop. I have yet to be banned

I was wondering why cfws aren't patching the log functions to prevent them from being filled with errors and sent to Nintendo next time you open the eshop/forgot to disable data sharing.

Well he did launch Fortnite in cfw without airplane mode within his 1st attempt. The damage was done the moment he connected their server with cfw.

Good Intel and I commend you on your work. personally I restore my nand everytime I want to go back online from sx. I waste about 30 minutes doing this not counting the few minutes to restore my saves. Please update the OP if switch 4 gets banned

yes updating games in cfw has been known to alot of bans. Unless you install nsp updates offline
Actually, it's a completely new user with first post. He/She 99.99% did not actually do this. This is just common sense and stuff already gained from the community.

I could simply say I did this on 69 Nintendo Switches and then start listing a bunch of common sense stuff and say 68 of them got banned. However, the one that didn't get any errors and didn't play online didn't get banned.

Thats fine I answered his/her question. The general idea is that people need to stay offline in CFW so that they don't end up getting instant bans.
