Because RCM has no visual cues, we can't tell when the Switch enters RCM, and once it does, it starts consuming power because the Switch has to be on in RCM. AutoRCM works by preventing the Switch from booting up and automatically entering RCM whenever we turn on the Switch, either by pressing the power button or plugging the Switch in with a USB cable. And since its so hard to tell when its on in RCM, its equally as hard to tell if its off. One identifier is to plug the Switch is in to see if its on, which if not, will automatically turn it on. Then you can hold the power button for however long until the device no longer detects the APX device. jimmyj's suggestion to check whether the Switch is in RCM or not involves feeling if its warm or not.
