To be fair, the majority of users who come into the homebrew scene started with piracy, then moved into homebrew. This has been the case since homebrew scenes were a thing. Free games are appealing to everyone.
Well, you're right, and that was my case. But I wouldn't compare that statement to "hey people are here only for free stuff bye"

I'm still confused as to why people believe Atmosphere is going to be in any way a better product. Until both products are out in the wild nobody knows anything with any certainty really.

TX can, and probably do, have developers on their team every bit as accomplished as anything reSwitched have, if not more so as these guys are actually counting on the product to make them some money, they certainly have more to lose than simply the 'respect' of the entitled masses.

Atmosphere could be great, it could be amazing; and I hope it is cos I don't really wanna pay anything if I don't have to. But I will pay for quality if it turns out that way.

yeah in terms of paid vs free being safer, its a tough one while gateway caused a few brick with their stupid brick code (I'm not counting clones who sucked at their job of cloning and caused bricks) vs those caused by people making incorrect steps etc when using the initial free CFW's as a hardmodder who was fixing these systems I only ever fixed 3 gateway bricks (including 2 of my own I caused on purpose for testing) but probably well over 60 caused by buggy cfws/downgrade software or people who don't understand what they were doing just doing random shit and bricking their system, even if you factor in the bricks caused by clones it was still only about 10

I guess you could argue that there was way more people attempting to use free cfw vs gateway, but the fact there was just one little splurge of bricks by gateway but a continuous stream from wip cfw's, the notion that "open source = safe , closed source = dangerous" is silly

To be fair as long as their is RCM, a way to dump your sysnand and finally a way to restore it then we should all be safe in the long run. Just need to be educated on the steps on how to recover when needed. Always prefer the open source path but the closed 'easy' solution also has its benefits.

As much of this forum it's down to personal choice. Just make yours :)

Oh wow, someone old enough to remember swap meets and "copy meets", my memberberries are tingling. Back in the day, when nobody really had Internet and those who did had slow dial-up, that was the primary way to get software. Good times.
I member.

I'm not against piracy per-say nor am i for it either. there will be people who get a switch because friends gift it to them who couldn't afford it or a handful of games otherwise, there will be cheap-arses and pirate because of i guess you could call it "Obsessive Pirating Disorder" (Downloading a game just because they can or feel they need to despite they may/maynot like or want the game initially.) there's some who will on the Morally grey area of "Try before you Buy" not every developer's going to release a teaser video or Demo to give a feel for the game and playing -> watching it played (Stream or trailer) -> simple gameplay screenshots. for ex. in my own case i didn't like Darkest Dungeon at first glance, it didnt seem like something i could get into, but after watching alot of streamers play it now i want a copy and cant decide PC or Switch.

But the Switch really didnt need to see Piracy this Soon. right now its going to likely be hard/convoluted for piracy and the available amount of switches out in stores that can be modified for it dwindle more these "Mariko" units spread. so i don't think its going to have the devastating impact say Piracy did on the PSP (half way thru developers stopped paying attention to itand games started to slowly ever cease. all at the excuse of fear of piracy), i don't think-ish Piracy had a huge devastating impact on the 3DS, yes before things like RXTools, Luma the easy methods like A9LH/B9S there were flashcards but it required you to Buy a device and additional store and how can i say it.. slowed i guess "Adoption rate" , but when it got so easy to something like a majority of FW's were exploitable, a old DS flash card exploited the console, DSIware Injection Downgrades, for Modification and piracy was just "FBi +Cia File and CIA Angel/Freeshop" it was quite late in the Handhelds lifespan and i think any damage done just what only hastened the death only a teeny bit? (i refer to how steadfast Nintendo is marching to backtrack on their word and make the switch a successor to not just the WiiU but 3DS as well for the foreseeable future)

atleast here's hoping the potential for "Easy Piracy" doesn't shoot the Switch in the perverbial foot too soon into it's life.

If you can edit the files on the modchip, so I could, say, run Atmosphere, I'll consider buying it.
It doesn't need a PC, which is an automatic plus.

Oh dear, i find the modchip useless for most people who have the first model, i hate people that profit off shit like this.
Well if it was someone from the community doing a all-in-one 100$ chip that does it all no one would also say anything bad about him...

I think TX made something with quality, the RCM jig from them looks far ahead of any 3D printed ones being sold and they actually have the switch running backups.

Remember they also made the software and had to put the device into mass production, do you think they would offer them to everyone?´

Anyway, only buys the device who wants.

I my self hope later someone could rip TX software and add to android in a APK so we could just press a button on our android phone and boom TX software and backups all the way :). But their Jig looks nice too .

If things don't change to a permanent method so soon I would rather put a button on my Joy-cons or add a magnetic switch inside to enter RCM instead. But I think after everyone having the switch hacked it will be just a matter of time until we get a permanent cold BOOT to CFW and no more RCM (at least I hope it doesnt take much for my 3.02 switch ;)).

That depends... is this hypothetical person doing tiny soldering?

Atmosphere isn't a complete replacement though, it's just patching Horizon. Playing higher firmware games would require spoofing which only gets you as far as until a game requires libs only available in a new firmware. Further work will have to be done if/when that happens.

That said, I don't think calling Atmosphere a CFW is even accurate. You'll notice they don't say CFW anywhere on the GitHub. It's not a custom firmware, it's a customized firmware.
This is so wrong it's embarrassing

lol the whole point of hacking is to have piracy
all is for "homebrew" comments just people kidding themselves

With Nintendo killing virtual console and locking out local save backup, I would like to stick it to them. Regarding piracy, I really don't want it possible until at least one more year. Easy piracy is going to kill the small indie drive to develop for the system.

spent the last day download BBB dumps, I will say avoid getting them from public torrent sites, bunch of broken archives

This has always been the case when you think about it until the homebrew community can come up with something like TX method .. you and I can do this easily but parents or whatever don’t have time.. knowledge. Back in the psp days I was explaining to someone if their kid updates the psp and how to turn the battery into a pandora battery and downgrade again etc. they didn’t want to hear it. They said I will just come to you .. I don’t know these things. So yeah. Easy/quality is always going to win .. even if people have to spend $$$ on it.

Until the performance of the free CFW like Atmosphere offers the same as the one TX has, then people would buy the TX. That is the edge TX has.

Also, the TX has not officially comfirmed what is included inside the box and what do we expect for buying their mod.
Is it updatable? Is the process of backup loading a copy paste or limited to certain games on every update? Is it accepting homebrew apps made for them? Will they be the APPLE Company of the switch? A lot more. The video is so vague and we would appreciate a complete text list or video of the whole features. Not just some backup loading and how to do it.
