That's what I don't get as well. Do people really buy a console just to keep it in a closet or a drawer for possibly years until hacks come out? That seems wasteful especially when they are in such short supply and there are lots of people still trying to get one who would get more enjoyment out of it.
I have my PS4 and Switch in my closet so yes as a person who works, has no habits, and has no kids yes people do this.

At this point work exhausts me so much after dealing with retarded customers and literally running around (if my phone is to be believed a total of 8+ miles) that even gaming is sometimes too much effort. At most I can only game in short 15 minute bursts. I still haven't completed breath of the wild either, and I've only done one of the divine beast and have plenty of land to explore still, so I'll be more than happy with that for another 8 months probably. I honestly mostly play mk8d because it's easy to pick up, play a couple races, then put back away. It's easy to play a quick race between classes. 90% of the time it's the cartridge that's in my system.
I don't see how it's so surprising that people can be perfectly content with the games already out for a while until we get something.

Exactly this, and to add to that I have my gaming PC to keep me busy as I wait on @qwertyoruiop and @yellows8 or @ScriesM

For those people who buy a Switch to keep locked away for two years until homebrew, I think you're weird, and that's my opinion :P

For me, the things you can do with homebrew are not worth missing out on a year or two worth of good games. I buy my consoles to play games, and if I can't do that, that's a bust. And I don't pirate, either. If I can get homebrew on the side while still legally buying all my games, sure, I'll do it, but not at the expense of doing what the console is meant to do -- play games. I get a lot of time on my daily commute and in between classes at college and my Switch is a perfectly good way to spend that time. Would be a shame if I just had it locked up or just limited myself to a pool of two or three games that still work.

At present there are only two games even worth opening the box for both of which I can play in 4k on my PC, see no reason to open it yet at all

I've got a PC, a wii u that I've only play a few of the titles I actually installed, a 3ds with many titles I haven't played, a modded original xbox (with a large hard drive for game backups) and a n64 flashcard with every n64 game on it. I've got plenty of games to tie me over. And frankly the only major game coming up is odyssey and I don't even really care about that right now.

Where does everyone keep pulling this magical "two years" from? At least when I say my 12 months estimation, I make it known that it's my guess based on current progress. But everyone saying it won't happen for two years just seem to state it as fact from some magical source.
And I own 12 games on my switch, and never have played online anyway. So really losing online play means nothing for me as I already didn't play online. And again why is it difficult to understand that not everyone needs a ton of games to be happy. Every console I've owned I've chosen to just not buy a ton of games for. I have a ton of money in my bank account and could easily buy games, but I don't need to because I'm perfectly happy playing the same 10 or so games. Until something major comes out that I care about, it won't matter to me.

Hence it's my opinion! You do you, my man. I can go long stretches without new games as well, but the Switch is getting a pretty steady stream of must-have titles (for me). Want to be able to play Super Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 later. Plus, I like getting in my regular Splatoon fix, and for that I need online anyways.

Also, one year, two years, it's still a long time and I don't care to wait because homebrew is just a novelty for me that I can easily do without.

Oh boy, another one of those people that are so inept they cannot discern the difference between fact and opinion.

Which part of this is not a fact? Are you saying that it's just opinion that the Switch can't run homebrew right now? It's just opinion that future games will require updates? Are you that dense? I'm a scientist, I know what a fact is. It is total fact that not updating causes a sacrifice in functionality.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Non-piracy homebrew is nice, but not something I'd cripple my console experience for. Mario Odyssey is the first Switch that actually matters. I don't own a Switch. They are going to need to make a lot of great games before I buy a Switch. I no longer trust Nintendo to make enough good games. Piracy comes much later than homebrew. Most games aren't worth anything without online. Mario Maker and Splatoon are next to useless without online. Smash and MarioKart can't be taken seriously without online. The interesting Independent games can't be bought without Eshop access. Don't forget access to streaming video, a useful feature. No amount of save modification can make the current crop of games worth the price of them yet. There's still a ton I haven't played on the Wii U yet. Why would I buy another console just for the current round of port?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Then why even buy one? You could just buy one later when you really want one.

Question : How to play games without updating?

Answer : "You should upgrade", speculation, drama and piracy. Also the answer lost in a sea of irrelevant talk.

Can't we just open a "Q&A" section like stackoverflow except GBAtemp related? That would be so much better for the overall quality of the forum...

the switch has like 3 games dude, 2 of them are multiplayer, and the other one is Zelda. everything else is multiplats (hell even Zelda is on the Wii u/cemu,) you can play elsewhere. once Mario Odyssey comes out we'll have 2 Nintendo single player adventures to play. wow

so to counter your post, it's weird that people are so impatient in regards to updating for a system with essentially 2 games on it. just like, play something else

Are... are you kidding?

Zelda: BotW
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
ARMS
Splatoon 2
Mario + Rabbids
Sonic Mania
Disgaea 5 Complete
Shovel Knight

And that's off the top of my head. Upcoming this year we have:

Super Mario Odyssey
Skyrim
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
NBA/FIFA
Sonic Forces
Fire Emblem Warriors
SteamWorld Dig 2
Pokken Tournament DX

Again off the top of my head. The Switch's library is probably one of the best launch year lineups for any console. Do you not remember the paltry offerings on Xbox One and PS4 for months after they launched? In comparison, Switch already has four first-party Nintendo games and a strong lineup of indie titles. The whole "Switch has like 3 games" is utter nonsense.

There is one, it's called Ask. It's not on the level of stackoverflow but it's better than Yahoo Answers at least.

Zelda: BotW - available on Wii U/CEMu
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - available on Wii U
ARMS - Game One
Splatoon 2 - Game Two
Mario + Rabbids - Game Three
Sonic Mania - multiplat
Disgaea 5 Complete - mutliplat
Shovel Knight - multiplat

wow 3 games

again, this wasn't to say the switch had no games, it was to show that you had other options to play most

But unless you have a gaming laptop, then there's no other way to play these games on the go (minus Shovel Knight on 3DS). CEMU is not a perfect solution, and what if you never owned a Wii U? Actually, just for portability alone I prefer buying my games on Switch when possible (in the case of Sonic Mania and Disgaea 5). As such, I personally have found plenty of things to play on the Switch. I know I might sound like I'm trying to move goalposts, but I want to make a point that the Switch does have quite a nice library of games so far and for me, it's not worth locking away for a year or more. Saying it "only has three games" is rather disingenuous.

And to close, it's my personal opinion at the end of the day. I know not everyone's gonna like the games I listed, and so their opinion will be different from mine.

Are you serious? You said:

"An non-updated Switch is useless. Piracy is still years away and will end up working on the latest firmware. What happens when Mario Odyssey comes out? You just going to not play, just so maybe you can get piracy slightly sooner? That's ludicrous."

A non-updated switch being useless is an opinion. Piracy being years away is neither a fact nor an opinion, because it's not a true statement that can be proved at this time. That being ludicrous is an opinion. None of what you said is fact.

I hate even arguing about shit like this but I also hate seeing stupid people purposely trying to derail threads online.
