Hacking OFW region needs to match hardware region?

I'm trying to update my PSP fat (1000-series) from 5.00 M33-6 to a newer CFW, probably 6.61 PRO-C2.

According to several guides, the first step is to update to OFW 6.61. Guides usually link to
https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/system-updates/psp/

Now, the thing is that I have a UK PSP (1003) and that link is to the US firmware. Does that matter? Should I install UK (or European) 6.61?

The closest I've found on the UK playstation site is https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/explore/psp/ which has a hopeful link labelled "The latest system software", but unfortunately the link goes nowhere useful. Anyone got a working link for official UK firmware?

Thanks, I've tried web.archive.org but the link on the en-gb page (to http://eu.playstation.com/psp/support/general/detail/item54261/PSP-system-software-updates/ ) just redirects to a non-useful page, even on the earliest grab of that page.

Psp firmware files are universal. So you can use that just fine

It actually was on there. A user there, The Zett, had a server running with all of these. I had them from before but I was missing some. I redownloaded the whole collection from him.

Unfortunately he no longer has his server running. Pity, it had some cool stuff

Yeah was going to look into getting it uploaded but I see that link has them. I have the vita ones up to 3.61 or something I believe, and was looking to get PS3 and PS4 FW as well. Seems like the link is outdated on all of these.
