So... Nothing in the way of game cart update bypasses? I bought a Switch now for it to be on a hackable fw, but I don't know if I'll be able to keep myself from updating

The dumps of current games, which allowed us to see into the file structure, were done through bypassing the encryption through the Switch because of the backdoor hole from smhax. If you do not have the backdoor, you no longer have decrypted access to the software, meaning you'd need to find new ways to dump and decrypt new Switch software.

We've had easy access, past security, for a while and that's very unlikely to happen again. Further work would need to be done to defeat >3.0.1 security, and as you can plainly see most of the scene doesn't care past 3.0.0 because we don't care about bypassing software security and enabling piracy, we care about sandboxing the Switch for our curiosities.

Okay, but what does this mean for game cart update bypasses on fw 3.0.0 and below? I have a Switch on 2.3.0 that I'd like to play Odyssey on

You do not have the keys to bypass the security of anything that was made in SDK in 3.0.1 or higher. It is the same problem, you cannot read the data on the cart as it will have a different encryption and the cart will force you to update to be usable.

You will either update to 3.0.1, or you will not play Odyssey in the near future or ever.

So looks like I'm either going to have to update for it or wait a year for Homebrew, right? Ugh :/

Homebrew does not solve this problem. Homebrew will allow you to run other software, brought in by the dev who developed whatever tool you are using like, say for example, an emulator. Homebrew does not guarantee that someone will either (a.) figure out a way to get FW 3.0.0 to bypass security somehow* or (b.) defeat the encryption on 3.0.1 for use in 3.0.0.

*My confidence on this being remotely possible is near zero.

The very same person who's been exploiting this hole for months said not to expect homebrew this year. This takes time, don't expect a chicken from the egg before its hatched, otherwise you'll get a rotten omelet.

In my situation, where I can't buy another switch but really want to play Odyssey, do you recommend I just update when the game comes out to play it, or hold on and how for any possible exploit release?

I really cannot be the compass for you on this.

I have two Switches. One to play new games on and not worry about who/when/why someone defeats higher firmware security. And one to tinker with in CTU and deeper... until I burn something with my pins or brick it in some colorful fashion. With the recent TX Jetson board release, my interest in the Switch's deeper functionality may also wane in time but its still fun to tinker with and why I am involved in these things to begin with.

Homebrew may happen late this or early next year, but that doesn't promise you anything. Likewise, late this and early next year, finding a compatible Switch will be impossible.

if you are running with CTU do you understand how to run this SMHAX Exploit ? i would like to understand it.

I really hope not.

And I hope hackers refrain from releasing anything related up until 2019/2020. Not doing so would increase the already expensive systems, games and accessories, at least where I live. And import buying wouldn't be an issue if shipping wasn't even more expensive than what I'd like to buy.

i am in the same boat ,just bought a new switch from lamestop today on 2.3.0
we don't even know if Odyssey will contain a FW update though right?
Nintendo has a history of not putting latest updates on big releases
i mean they had forever and a day to put 5.5.2 on BOTW and didn't do it
so what makes us so sure we won't be able to play it?

Honestly it's doubtful you need to test alot of things before sending out a proper release of anything. Just writing, compiling, testing and progressing with code can sometimes take ages try and image how painful it would have been to have had to test slowhax on 3ds a few times before you were confidant enough to release it.
