OP
I have successfully sensor-modded my Slim PS2 (SCPH-75001 with a 3.11U DVD Player).
I've burned modified ISOs (replacing NTGUI.ELF with uLaunchELF 4.42a) of both Star Wars Battlefront and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon to Memorex DVD+R's, but always get the RSOD when (I presume) it attempts to load the .ELF file. I tried burning the MK:A ISO to a DVD-RW as well, but the console simply freezes when loading files from the disc. Additionally, I own the PlayStation 2 Online Start-Up Disc v3.0, but I do not own any CD-R's.
I've already spent the entire day trying to get this to work, so I'm posting here. Due to the age of the PS2, the majority of online guides which are still up are largely unhelpful and poorly-written, especially with troubleshooting.
I'd like to know a few things before I waste more DVDs:
  1. Do these games even work with the swap trick? I have a few more I could try, but I'm attempting to do this without spending any money whatsoever, so buying Agent Under Fire will be a last resort...
  2. Do DVD+R's even work with the swap trick in general? Do they work on my PS2 model? I can buy a few DVD-R's if I know for a fact only they will work...
  3. Does the latest version of uLaunchELF only output in 240p? All I have is a component cable...
  4. What are the most common failure points when using this method?
  5. Is there a specific way/time to perform the swap trick?
Thanks in advance!

1- block sensors
2- install freemcboot
3- download swapmagic elf
4- insert original ps2 game
5- load elf
6- swap disc with burned copy
7- ...
8- profit

or simply patch your backups with esr patcher and save yourself the trouble of swapping discs
Unless I'm completely missing the point, my goal is to install FreeMCBoot, which I am having trouble doing for the reasons above.
I just need my questions answered.

At least I can answer the component cable one. It does work, at least it worked with my modded ps2. Also, have you looked into swap magic? It can load elfs from a usb, so that way you can boot everything you need to install FMB.

Edit: Also, you could have someone send you a pre installed Memory card with FMB and everything would be solved. I've never tried the swap method because of the inaccuracy of it, so I'm giving these side options.

I could hook you up with a FMCB memory card. You would have to send me a card and the return shipping. And the reason it does not work is you cant swap trick PS2 games only PS1 games, you can swap with swap magic for PS2 games.

Really? I've never heard this... Everybody on the planet says 007 Agent Under Fire works for launching uLaunchELF.

I don't feel comfortable shipping out a memory card, sorry. But thanks for the offer.

Maybe there is a certain version of the disc that does work? I could sell you a non official card with FMCB on it, but people don't recommend you use it other then to make an official card a FMCB card.

The main game i know of that works swap wise for installing freemcboot is 007 agent under fire. I don't know if you have a copy of that game but if you do then google search "007 agent under fire ulaunchelf" and you should some across a site that has a pre patched version of the game you can do the swap trick with to be able to install freemcboot. Another way of doing it is buying swap magic 3.8 coder off of amazon which is nice to own. It has both cd and dvd versions in 1 pack.

Also from my personal experience ps2 systems have issues reading dvd+r disc so i usually stick with dvd-r disc. I hope this helped.

I guess I'll have to buy Swap Magic at some point, then. Thanks for the answers.

https://web.archive.org/web/20160921081507/http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/swap.php

"Step 1
1. Make an .ISO image of 007 Agent Under Fire using IMGBurn.
2. Rename the uncompressed BOOT.ELF to DRIVING.ELF

Step 2
1. Use Apache.exe to open the .ISO of the game.
2. Highlight "DRIVING.ELF" in Apache.exe on your right side.
3. Select "ISO Tools" from the tab above, now select "Change TOC for Selected File", change the "Size (dec)", don't change the LBA. This is the file size of the "uncompressed BOOT.ELF". If you're using a different uLaunchELF/BOOT.ELF, right-click it and select Properties, the first "Size" is the size in bytes. This is the size you need to use in Apache.exe.
4. With "DRIVING.ELF" still highlighted, select "ISO Tools" again, now select "Update Selected File", select the DRIVING.ELF file that was ulaunchelf's "uncompressed BOOT.ELF" you rename, it will say "selected file replaced".
5. Burn the edited .ISO to disc with IMGBurn.

Step 3
1. Put the original game in your PS2.
2. Play the game until you make it to the 2nd level which is the DRIVING level, then save your game.
3. Return to the main menu, swap trick your original for your burned disc, and select the 2nd level.

Press O button for the FileBrowser in the uLaunchElf screen, move down to mass:/ and hit O, then move down to select FREE_MCBOOT.ELF and hit O.

I didnt test any of these games, so i cant help if some info is not complete, but im assuming that most swapping takes place in the games main menu."
