Gaming Nintendo DSi data recovery

Hi,

I'm attempting to do some data recovery on my Nintendo DSi. The data that I'm after is some photographs that were taken and then deleted with the DSi. Unfortunately, after prying off the back of the thing, I can see that the memory is integrated right into the mobo. I'm worried about how exactly to go about doing this without b0rking the thing and I'm hesitant to hack it either since the longer I have it on, the more likely data corruption becomes due to overwriting of the deleted files.

Really, I'm not exactly sure what to do and I'm totally open to suggestions on how to recover my data.

Hardmod to backup the nand, then time to figure out your CID and ConsoleID (hope you have some DSiware installed that can be copied to SD...)

I assume you had the photos on the photo partition and not on SD?

To try and retrieve them you'll have to dump your nand. Luckily photos are saved on a separate partition so as long as you hadn't saved any new photos from Launcher or the photo app, you may be able to retrieve them. Though in general I suggest not using your DSi that much until you get it nand modded as the more you run the OS and the more the file system changes due to everyday use, the harder it will be to retrieve useful data.

I think it will be difficult to recover data from such a DSi NAND and what's more, the format it has is not very common. In all ways, hardmode is obligatory, the rest is luck.

Another question from my part, Can I get a NAND Dump from a broken motherboard?

The pictures themselves are JPEG in a FAT12 encrypted partition, and the encryption is not only well documented but also implemented in a public program...

Sure (depending on the definition of "broken", you may have to cut traces) but you will need to know your CID and ConsoleID to actually decrypt the backup, the latter requires (with current knowledge) you to have copied a DSiware to SD while it still worked

Correct, the photos were not on an SD card. Thanks also for the info.

Do you know of any resources where I can found out how to obtain my CID and console ID?

Answering my own question about what DSiware is... posting it here in case anyone else is as lazy and / or dumb:

A simple google yielded the answer as to what DSiware is:

[...] games and applications, collectively known as DSiWare, for the Nintendo DSi handheld game console available for download via the DSi Shop.

Silly me, should have STFW in the first place.

bump. Gave another try to fix my DSi but I think it's really dead.
So an answer to the above question would be very helpful

2 extract all the files to the root of sd card

4 put the sd card in dsi and open flipnote studio

5 click view flipnotes

6 click sd card

7 click on lenny flipnote with EUR orUSA or JP

8 click edit

9 click the flipnote frog

9 go to frame editing and click copy

10 exit this flipnote

11 open the big lenny face

12 click edit

13 open frame editing and click paste

14 now using d pad chose fwtools.nds and press A

15 write down CID on peper

16 on up screan using d pad chose Dump Nand and press A

17 now wait until complites

18 Then chose Exit and click A and turn off the dsi

19 now search for nand.bin in sd card and copy it on desktop

20 now you done the first part the second part is to decrypt the nand
