I bought an item from a user on a forum (not here) and used PayPal F&F for the transaction to save some money, plus I was desperate for the item and bearly could afford more, as the shipping was more than expected.

I know it's probably my own fault for using this, instead of a actual goods transaction with Buyer Protection but is there anything I can do to get my money back, if the seller does a runner with my money?

I already had a look. There is no protection if you pay someone as Friends & Family. Its used because there is no extra fee to withdraw the money (seller side)

@Thelonewolf88 please don't forget to update us about the answer you got from paypal

I will do, however, I have been back and forth with the seller today via PM's, trying to sort things out but it's looks like he is stalling for time with difference excuses. I will be contacting PP soon enough and update here with what they say.

If Paypal is a no go, you can try ask your bank to do a chargeback. There's extra security for cases like these if you pay with a credit card.

Don't wanna open a new thread 'cause the title would be very similar.

A while ago I had a buyer via Amazon who claimed a factory sealed new copy of a 3DS game came without the game cartridge and manual but the thing is that I've not received it nor heard from him again. I'm guessing he was trying to scam me and then opted to keep the game.

How often do physical game copies are missing manuals/cartridges/discs? Very rarely but even so I offered him to have it returned.

Last year, I bought sealed Chrono Trigger for the DS, from the shop, it was a clearance. I wanted to keepnit like that but darn it, I must play it. Opened the box, manual was there, no game. Shop that I have bought it from from didn't give a fluck

Any updates on this OP?
I'm interested, hope everything works out for you.

Nope, still nothing. Nearly two weeks now and no shipping confirmation/tracking.

Had that happen years ago with Snes carts. Boxed games resealed but without the cart inside.

Wouldn't you notice before you bought it? SNES carts are pretty heavy.

Another way to notice is through the seal. If it was a Nintendo published game you'd see "Nintendo" label all over it, if it's by a third party publisher it'd have the recycle symbol but then there are also third party publishers who reseal games as mere stores do. Shin Megami Tensei Apocalypse (PAL edition) is a perfect example of one of those.

Update:

Basically, I'm screwed, which I already thought so. Here is PayPal Response:

Dear ........

Thank you for contacting PayPal.

I've reviewed the transaction ID (............................) on your account and I can see that this payment is a ‘Personal’ payment.

Personal payments are not intended for the purchase of goods or services from sellers and therefore cannot be disputed.

Personal payments can be used for the following:

  • Sending a gift
  • Sharing a lunch bill
  • Paying your share of the living expenses
  • Sending money to friends and family.
As Personal payments are not for the purchase of goods, there is no buyer or seller protection offered on these transactions and as such, a buyer dispute cannot be opened.

Purchase payments are for paying for an item, such as something won on eBay. You can open claims for these payments, as they might be eligible for coverage under PayPal Buyer Protection.

We encourage you to communicate with the seller to resolve the problem.

Please let us know if you require any further assistance.

Yours sincerely,
Anna Poorani
