So while trying to dump smash 4 to mod it using homebrew ddd, the dump didn't start. I made sure the IP address was correct and did all the steps correctly. I even restarted twice but both other times didn't work. How do I fix this?

If you're having problems, just download the game using USB Helper. Far more easier than just dumping. Plus it'll save you hours of waiting.

I had problems dumping the game too but I was able to download using USB Helper. What do I do at this point since I have the main game, DLC, and updates all in separate folders?

Use WUP Installer to install each separately

Install to a flash drive or to the Wii U? I don't have a flash drive, only an external hard drive with a terabyte worth of video and music files on so I can't reformat that.

Or can it be installed on the SD card?

You can install internally to sysnand. Or you can use Wii U USB Helper to decrypt it and run it from SD in loadiine (slow and no online play)

Read the noob guide in the stickies. It will tell you how to install the game and all its updates and dlc.

If you install the DLC you'll have to set yourself up with a CFW

So I have to install the game to the sysnand or SD card even if you own the disc and all the DLC content? I'm trying to get into modding characters and stages.

There are lots of ways to do this. If you already own the DLC then you won't need custom firmware (CFW). If you want to play with modding it then you probably want to run it from Loadiine GX2. You can use Wii U USB Helper to decrypt everything that you downloaded. Then read the OP for Loadiine GX2 so you know how to set up the files on your SD card. Test with Loadiine. Once it's working then go ahead and start hacking away at your files and savegames.

If you want to play the game from a digital copy rather than using your Disc and all else being equal, you'd do this:

1. Create a folder called "install" on your SD. Put just the game files in there. (not the update or the dlc)
2. Download WUP Installer GX2 and put the files in the right spot on your SD card
3. On the Wii U Launch WUP Installer GX2 from the Homebrew Launcher menu
4. Install the game to sysnand (or a usb flash drive if you want)
5. Temporarily disable your internet blocking
6. Go on eshop and download any missing DLC to the system. (It all might already be there when you start the game)
7. Launch your game and apply any missing game updates (there are no Wii U system updates right now)
8. Once you get it all working then re-enable your DNS blocking

Okay thanks for explaining this. I will try decrypting with USB Helper then check out the Loadiine GX2 info.

Let us know if you have more questions. It's a lot to take in. There really isn't a "one size fits all" solution for Wii U modding. There's tons of ways to do it.
