For XMB are you using the newest rpx of retroarch, no matter what I do I cannot get it to work, I am using the 5/20 rpx version of retroarch and the assets folder from the latest nightly of retroarch x86 x64, i erased the config and set the directory to sd:/retroarch/media/assets and reset retroarch and i get nothing different.

Are you using the updated individual RPX cores inside /retroarch/cores/ as well?
If not, you can download them using the online updater and selecting Update/Download cores.
For XMB, make sure you have /retroarch/media/assets/xmb, if not then you have the paths wrong or you didn't put the assets in the right place.
xmb folder should be alongside other folders like glui (or something) for reference

I downloaded the newest retroarch rpx zip and extracted it to my sd, overwrote everything on the sd, opened the latest retroarch for windows x64 and took the assets folder from there, 75mb, and moved it to media, deleted the config file, put my sd into my cbhc wii u and loaded the wup retroarch channel, pointed the directory to sd:/retroarch/media/assets and reset retroarch and it does nothing different, loads the same way it always does, and the assets folder i used has many folders inside, xmb included.

Go to Settings -> Directories and change the one which says Assets to /retroarch/media/assets.
It's set to only /retroarch/media/ without the assets folder by default.

Don't worry about it, take care what you need to. Once you download it, place the file and extract this to SD:/retroarch folder, and if it asks to merge or replace anything, let it.

From there, I use notepad++ to edit config files, if you use that (which I recommend highly), go to
line 17, and change

Code:
assets_directory = "sd:/retroarch/media/assets"

copy and paste that over that string, save, and then load up RetroArch, hope this helps. Be sure you extract media.7z to the retroarch root folder and only that RA root folder as shown here:

Ok I finally got the backgrounds to show I had to change some option called dynamic backgrounds or something lol but now I'm back to it works fine then I switch the wiiu off then next time I load retroarch there is a problem with system memory lol one step forward one step back. Thanks for your help much appreciated.

Someone else get black screen with Sega CD games? I just checked and my bios are correct in retroarch/cores/system

So which is the latest nightly that works with XMB? I've tried the 5-23 build but that keeps giving system memory errors even after deleting the retroarch config

Check if you have the latest Homebrew Launcher version installed.
Also, try the RPX version of RA,not the ELF.

Damn, I'm sorry it doesn't work properly for you, I never had to change that option and I can load it without issue *sigh* I don't know what more I can suggest, I'm sorry :(
