Ok so I know most people are using retroarch on n3ds and n3ds xl and it works great but I'm using a old 3ds xl.

Currently I'm using which work great:
Picodrive for sega mega drive
Snes9x for Super Nintendo
VirtuaNES for Nes
Mgba for gameboy advance.

Is there any smooth running CPS, GBA Or MAME emus?

QuickNES is also good for Nes but compatibility is not that high.
For Mgba, I cannot agree it's smooth, for most games.
And also:
GameYob for GB.

Even on N3ds, CPS1/CPS2/Neogeo emulators cannot run smoothly enough, just better than on o3ds.

You on 11.3?
Does it matter with firmware versions?

I'm on 11.2 with luma3ds like most of the people on here.

So no other emulators you guys can recommend for an old 3ds xl?

for GBA emulation, it changes from game to game. I find gpsp to work great for some games like core pokemon games, although it can occasionally crash on other games. However, I have seen it offer the best emulator experience on o3ds, but if you want more than that, VC injects are the way to go.

wait if you have a9lh then use @Asdolo 's tools to make games right on your home menu with 100% compatibility and performance (only downside is i don't think you can do snes because you have a O3DS but you can just use something like snes9gx which is the 2nd best snes emulator on the 3ds in my opinion)

GameYob DSi version is the best version of itself. NeoDS is perfect for Neo Geo if run with TWLoader. For GBA, I see great potential in GBARunner2, but it's not there yet.

For official emulators, do they really have 100% compatibility and performance? That's only true on what's officially released. There're still many games that have issues after injected or need tunning.
And in my opinion, Snes9X_3ds (no gx) is FAR BETTER than official snes emulator. Yes official releases got enough tests before release. However Snes9X is a generic emulator and runs smoothly even on old 3ds.

What's better on GameYob DSi version than on 3DS version? NiFi connect?

You dont need a gba emulator for 3ds if you have cfw.. the 3ds has gba firmware built in. Just convert a gba rom to .cia file with vc converters and install it. Runs better than on emulators.

exactly. However, the only complaints I see against that are 1: savestates (i can understand and see that), 2: some games can have issues (pokemon games saves not working), and 3: ghosting (never really seen it personally).

The only reason why Pokemon games don't work is because people never check to see what save type you need for it

I think you can fix the ghosting and save bug in pokemon games.

And yeah good point on that. Save states are great option to have

One of the sites that weren't blocked on the school's network was some file uploading sites. I would upload some games, write down the URL and take it to school one day.

It was easy to bypass some of the restrictions, as one of the admins left a registry key in the administrative shares drive, which allowed me to get around the blocking of some sites.
