So first, apologizes for even creating this post. I hate seeing irrelevant posts on the forums, but I find myself in a conundrum.

Now, my youngest son has decided violence is the answer to all problems (he's 4), and the gamepad with the large screen was his newest victim. Still in working condition but the left analog does some funky things.

Having decided to go with a "no gamepad use for everyone" (figured it's easier that way), I've found Haxchi won't start (cause it's a DS game) and Loadiine gets a mount error when using web browser exploit (Mii Maker).

Really want to avoid cold boot options as I do have kids and they can do dumb things (like throw a gamepad on the ground). Anybody have a suggestion on a possible alternative option?

Yes you can, you can boot up ftpiiu everywhere on your wiiu homebrew launcher, start filezilla up on your pc with your IP from ftpiiu, go to your coldboothaxchi game, if its "Brain Training" then go to the Brain Training Meta folder in filezilla app, download the meta.xml file in the meta folder, find this line below in the meta.xml file with notepad++:-

Find this line:-
<drc_use type="unsignedInt" length="4">2</drc_use>

Change it too and save:-
<drc_use type="unsignedInt" length="4">1</drc_use>

then you will see the options on your tv screen on boot up, instead of just your gamepad screen. Or if not set your cooldboothaxchi options on boot up to Autoboot to your needs, so if you just want the wiiu to boot systemnand up with full patches, choose that option on Autoboot and leave it there, it will then just boot into that option every time, until you press the home button on boot up and change that option to take off Autobooting.

Check my video out to see the video of it running on tv, its not that great footage but its there to see:

Your mount error is due to a dirty sd card and dirty sd slot on your wiiu. Just give your sd card a good wipe and blow as well, when you slot your sd card in your wiiu's sd card slot press it in and hold it in tight and let your fingers go, you will find that works better and you wont get the mount error pop up all the time. Also giving your wiiu's sd slot a good blow that helps too.

You want Ftpiiu Everywhere on your sd card, download the fix94 version below for coldboothaxchi installs also use Filezilla version 3.16.0 the new versions are a bit dodgy and don't work as they should. Just put the .elf file on your sd card wiiu/apps/... and boot the homebrew launcher up as you would usually, select ftpiiu app, grab your IP address from the screen, enter it into the first box in filezilla, top left hand side and connect and then find your haxchi game and its meta folder and you want the blue meta.xml file inside and then just download your meta.xml file to your desktop alter with notepad++ and upload it back again with filezilla, just drag and drop your new meta.xml file back into the same box it originally came from, that should just upload it automatically, just choose OK to overwrite the same file and that should work OK.

I'm going to leave this message here: FTPiiU isn't a toy so only use this in emergency. [Like this situation] Don't play around it!

Yes hes right, be very careful using ftpiiu & filezilla don't go messing around with anything your not sure about, it can brick your wiiu asap and actually tbh with you, if your not confident about doing what I have told you, don't do it please! or just double/triple check everything before you upload your meta.xml file and then restart your wiiu. Even to the point when you have uploaded your new meta.xml file to filezilla, download it again to your desktop, open it and double check everything's correct and looks right and then when your finally happy, then restart your wiiu :)

Felek666 that's also a concern for me as well. Not a stranger to messing around with things (CyanogenMod/Lineage on phones) but not about bricking things either to dodge a conveince issue.
