That's right, "pixels" on old CRT screens weren't exactly square, whereas they are now, which forces to make a choice between pixel perfect and aspect ratio. Now that we speak about it, I think it's probably the reason why Nestopia provides a different aspect ratio than the others: they probably chose the overall ratio being accurate rather than having perfect pixel.
But isn't there also the overscan that enters that story, and changes that aspect ratio thing ?
It's only a matter of choice, if you play from far away and/or use some filters anyways the artifacts are going to be softened, so I understand this choice. In any case, pixels couldn't really be spotted on old CRT TV's so all of this is not really a matter of fidelity, but rather just an aesthetic choice.
By the way, to get a nice "old crt feeling", the Blargg filters from Nestopia are actually very good.
@SG854 : if your goal is to have 4:3 in the first place, why don't you just set that precise ratio instead of a custom one close to it ? Is it to "zoom in" a little bit to account for the cropped overscan ?
