That's right, "pixels" on old CRT screens weren't exactly square, whereas they are now, which forces to make a choice between pixel perfect and aspect ratio. Now that we speak about it, I think it's probably the reason why Nestopia provides a different aspect ratio than the others: they probably chose the overall ratio being accurate rather than having perfect pixel.
But isn't there also the overscan that enters that story, and changes that aspect ratio thing ?

It's only a matter of choice, if you play from far away and/or use some filters anyways the artifacts are going to be softened, so I understand this choice. In any case, pixels couldn't really be spotted on old CRT TV's so all of this is not really a matter of fidelity, but rather just an aesthetic choice.

By the way, to get a nice "old crt feeling", the Blargg filters from Nestopia are actually very good.

@SG854 : if your goal is to have 4:3 in the first place, why don't you just set that precise ratio instead of a custom one close to it ? Is it to "zoom in" a little bit to account for the cropped overscan ?

I have no idea what happened, I played a little bit too much with the bindings and I can't control Retroarch at all anymore. Even by deleting the folder and starting a fresh installation. It's just crazy. Can anybody copy/paste their retroarch.cfg contents regarding the bindings ?

Thanks a lot :wtf:

Nope the gamepad doesn't answer anymore with a fresh install. But I think I found the problem, it was a WII U Gamepad.cfg file created in sd:/wiiu/, I have no idea what it was for and why it was there, but I deleted it and I have the standard fresh behaviour now. I'll leave that here in case someone needs it

Cool, as good as (if not better than) XMB.
Do you mean XBMX which is now called KODI?
To make it short, Emulationstation is something like a slim kind of KODI but (and only for) videogame emulation.
I think it looks fantastic, is designed for TV usage, is written in C++ and open source.

XMB is an offical menu driver for Retroarch, not released yet for the Wii U version.

Xmb and xbmx are two totally different things xmb (cross media bar) is a front end for retroarch

Thanks efen3001 and Marko76, never heard of XMB although I'm sure I saw screenshots of what is shown in the YouTube video you've linked, efen3001.
I'd prefer Emulationstation as it has a biult in scrapper to get cover arts, game info and stuff from archive.vg but I'd be thankful for any nice frontend which might come to the Wii U. :)

I've been out of the loop lately. Any way to change cores without the game pad? Using the pro controllers and still being required to use the gamepad is so annoying lol
You can change cores while in retroarch so yes you can change cores with a pro controller (or any wii u controller)

Don't tell me I've been exiting retroarch to pick a new core this whole time for nothing... I thought the Wiiu version was separated lol
You need the latest version, and need to copy the retroarch folder to the root (that contains all the cores+info) then you can use load core or boot a rom and select the core you want

@brienj made a unofficial channel version, and you can also have haxchi boot the main retroarch elf
I already have the homebrew channel booting through haxchi. Possible to have more then one? That would be super nice to boot into it through the homemenu and then just switch cores from within Retroarch itself

Yes you can have more. You can even use pirated games (but you need cfw to boot it)
