Bit the bullet and updated firmware.

Works fine!

Even if it would've bricked you could've booted Hourglass9 or such to restore backup.

Btw I don't understand what you mean by two FBI's? When you inject FBI into H&S you then have FBI instead of H&S .. You then install FBI with the said app, and afterwards you're supposed to inject H&S back. Why didn't you just inject hs.app back? Note that it is possible that even after injecting hs.app back the icon of H&S remains as "FBI", but this is just a visual error - it's the H&S app and it works as intended.

do you need cfw to be able to download cia's?

No, you can download CIA's w/o CFW, but if you want to install em and play em, then you require CFW in order to do so.
Unless their legit CIA's which AFAIK can be installed on 11.2 w/o CFW, but with the way the guide works now, you mind as well just get it.

I previously had a Gateway emunand setup and decided to follow the guide (3ds.guide) to get lumacfw seeing as it seemed like a better option compared to gateway.

I followed the guide including the step to remove emunand (https://3ds.guide/move-emunand) but after finishing the guide my cia games from the emunand aren't showing up (I checked in Godmode9 under the browse sysnand option and the titles folder was empty save for the cias installed in the guide).

Is there any way to recover the games and/or the saves?

Try restoring your backup to sysNAND again. You didn't mess with your Nintendo 3DS folder did you? What do you see if you go into Settings -> Data Management -> 3DS software? Are the games greyed out with a cross, or not there?

In data management the only thing showing up are the cia's I installed during the guide. If by restoring the backup to sysNAND you mean restoring my emunand backup to sysnand in Hourglass9, I tried that and it doesn't make a difference.
Thanks for you help btw.

Did you format your emuNAND before making a backup of it? And are you sure the backup you're restoring is your emuNAND backup not your sysNAND backup?

Have a look on Activity Log and Mii Plaza and see if that matches your data from your emuNAND. If it doesn't, I think the only explanation is that you backed up sysNAND not emuNAND --- somehow. Maybe you created a new emuNAND (which would be based on your sysNAND's data) before you backed it up.

The activity log has all my games from the emunand recorded.

The only explanation then is you messed with the Nintendo 3DS folder, which contains your installed games. If you have a backup you can put it back, otherwise you will have to install your games again and have lost your save files (unless you backed them up with JKSM).

Did you follow step 10?

Backup every file on your SD card to a folder on your computer; all files will be deleted in the following steps

I was following the tutorial "How to get AL9H without buying anything" somewhere on this forum.
It didn't mention anything about getting HS back.

Well that guide is stupid and should not be used anyways. The only real guide is THE guide .. 3DS.guide

When moving from a smaller SD card to a bigger one, if you just copy/paste files to the newer card will games function anymore, or would they have to be re-installed (or their titles)? What about their save files? Would you need to back them up with JKSM or does copy/pasting the contents of the SD card just do the job?

I'm selling my modded 2DS (with just a mere 4GB SD card) to someone and in case they ask they'd expect me to know .. but I don't lol.

If it's an A9LH modded system, you just move the contents to the new SD card.

Well I definitely didn't mess with the Nintendo 3DS folder save for backing it up.
I copied it over again but that didn't do anything. I also tried restoring the emunand backup again but that didn't do anything either.
Can I back up the saves from the folder on my pc somehow?

Are you sure they were .cia games and not roms (.3ds files) on the Gateway itself ..? I can't think of any reason why your backup would not be working and Quantumcat has already covered all the bases here .. :x.

Nope, definitely cia games. Could it be because I never unlinked my nands?
