Homebrew Still use DNS block on A9LH?

Hi @ all,

I just upgraded to A9LH and wanted to know if it is still a good idea to block update servers (and eshop unfortunately) on that new machine. Is there any need for that still? Could a 11.3 update break a9lh?

The reason we need to block the update servers on the Wii U is that Nintendo can update it automatically. That's never been the case for the 3DS, you can just choose not to update.

In any case, there's very little Nintendo can do in an update to patch out A9LH. And even if there was something they could do, A9LH is powerful enough to just patch out the patch, so you'd just have to wait a bit before updating.

So no, you don't need to use a custom DNS server to block anything.

It only connects to networks you've set up in the settings. You should be safe.

great! cuz the 3DS also connects to anything just running by (spotpass I guess) and uses the open McDonalds Wifis as well.

Yes, Wii U can absolutely update itself automatically without any human input providing it's connect to the internet. If you one of those super paranoid types, you could always add these addresses into your routers URL filtering list.

I will just keep the Wii U offline until I need it to go online. And hope no free Wifi hotspot shows up... But wait: didn't undergroundmonorail tell me the Wii U wouldn't automatically connect to that kind of Wifi? The 3DS does, but the Wii U?

Your Wii U will certainly not connect automatically to a free wifi hotpot without human input, but i definitely know that 3DS automatically connects to Nintendo Zone wifi hotpots and downloads a sneaky firmware update.

It's always good practice to keep your hacked/piracy enabled low-firmware units offline until you absolutely desperately need it. Losing my hacks is not worth 5 minutes online for a pokemon trade, I'll have my free games instead, thanks!

I'm using a combination of Tubehax DNS and blocking nintendo CDNs in my router (that i posted above) and my Wii U on 5.3.2 has never updated itself and I've had loadiine since it was first release. So it's safe

ok, will go that way then! although my new router does not really block websites, unfortunately. but I guess two DNS servers in the Wii U setup will effectively handle that.

There no way to control content via your router? I thought parental controls inside them were a pretty standard feature these days? Mine is a 50 dollar bottom shelf ISP-supplied router and it's got a really nice and simple URL blocking system.

my crappy dlink dir 655 does not handle that. it can only filter words. and if I go with "nintendo" then every nintendo content is blocked. very sad.
