i was in your situation a few days ago. my red gateway card started acting up/not booting properly, so i followed plailect's guide to install cfw. there are specific instructions on how to transfer your old gateway emunand to the new cfw without losing anything you have installed.

this is by no means your only option, but it was relatively painless.

not everyone wants to do something has a chance of bricking their system if they mess up. OP, if you arent comfortable with doing a9lh, get the latest luma 3ds cfw. theres a 3dsx for it.
Is there a way I can use luma and keep my emunand? Do I just boot luma from the homebrew launcher? What about old brick for not using gateway, does that still happen?

I figured it out, seems you need to include the a9lh file on your sd card even if your not using a9lh, Is there any reason I would want a9lh anyway?
Well, you wouldn't be able to brick your 3ds (unless you bricked the BootROM, which loads before the ARM9 payload,) and you would have faster boot times. You also wouldn't need an EmuNAND because your 3ds practically cannot be bricked, and you would have more space on your SD card (since you don't need an EmuNAND.)

True, but it is very safe to install now. You can follow the guide by @Plailect, and as long as you don't do something stupid, you'll be just fine...
P.S. Once you do install a9lh, your 3ds practically cannot be bricked (as long as you don't brick the BootROM or the FIRM.) It's also safer than EmuNAND + CFW...

There are two ways you can do this.

1.the easiest way is to just install menuhax from browserhax on your 9.2 sysnand then drag and drop the correct files for luma cfw.it will work on your current emunand.

2.you can do what all the cool kids are doing here and convert to the a9lh master race with this guide https://plailect.github.io/Guide/ be warned though, the old 3ds has more risks going to a9lh then the new 3ds since the old 3ds method makes you downgrade again to 2.1 so you need to read the guide more then once and take a gamble. If you happen to get a new 3ds by any chance there is a downgrade less method which is risk free.

It's really not risky at all with the CTR transfer method. All you have to do is not turn your 3DS off while it is doing stuff.

Downgrading anything has its can of worms.Mistakes are expected to be made from anyone who follows the guide without reading the whole thing first due to constant changes to the guide.

It isn't a full downgrade though. Full downgrades are risky because each title has to be uninstalled before you can install the next. If the process is interrupted part-way through, the uninstalled title could cause a brick or a broken home menu. Whereas the CTR transfer is (I think) a atomic operation - it's either completely done or not done at all. So you can't really brick doing it.

But you just sead not to turn your 3ds off while its "doing stuff" that means its no better then sysupdater if you can brick halveway through if you freeze.Whats the difference? Even the guide tells you that it can happen in rare cases which is why you should let people make there own choices if you give them options
Before beginning the guide, you must know the risks of 3DS hacking: EVERY time you modify your system, there is always the potential for an UNRECOVERABLE brick. They’re rare, but still a possibility so make sure you follow ALL directions EXACTLY.
