I have a 3DS that was on 4.5U. Using Gateway the Gateway TimeMachine was installed and downgraded to 2.0. A system format was performed and now upon starting up the setup only gets the the nickname entry stage and the keyboard for entering the nickname does not appear. Anything I can do?

Two options.

1. Try holding L+R+Up+A held before and during boot to access recovery menu. You can update to 11.2 hopefully fixing the mess Gateway made of your console. To hack your console after this, you'll need a second already hacked O3DS or 2DS.

2. If you have a NAND backup, you can send it to someone to get hardmodded and have the NAND backup restored. This will cost you money.

Hopefully you have learned your lesson letting Gateway stuff near your console! FYI if you were using Plailect's guide, first of all your NAND would not have got messed up, and second, you'd have access to Decrypt9 to restore a NAND backup without need of a hardmod, even with the messed up NAND.

I think you don't need to continue with the actual sys-update. I also think @'gnmmarechal would help you (jjo192) with the hardmod, granted shipping+insurance is covered on your end.

Hope for the best; plan for the worst.

Had already tried the recovery menu but because there is no wifi settings in place it doesn't want to update. Had seen that on this site:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/997614-nintendo-3ds/71168246

"Other:
While booting up a 3DS system that is not set up, with a 3DS Game Card in it: A+B+X+Y+R -> force the game to boot, regardless of setting up the system"

Can anybody with a retail card tell me if it works. If so ill get a retail card with a low update on it and see if I can restore a functioning sysnand.

Or at least use the card to boot a retail game so that I can assign network settings to use the recovery menu.

Eh, how would you even get to network settings that way?

What's funny is that in newer versions the recovery mode would in fact go to network settings if you don't have internet access available when you try to connect...

Fair, would autobooting a retail game with an update prompt me to update? Or just not run?
