Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

And i thought FF7 sucked and should die in a fire and get auschwitzim for being a fucking Jew. See? That's being an asshole, exaggerated, but the point still stands. I wouldn't care if you were civil and constructive like WeedZ, but saying things like that doesn't add anything, you're just being an asshole.
Thank you. And I really don't care how you feel about FF7, I have something called free speech and free expression. So live with it.

Freedom of speech does not prohibit people from saying you are an asshole if you choose to exercise said freedom to express things in an assholeish manner.

The switch device wil be hookable with any dock or only the one he came with?
The Tablet device has a external charger besides the dock?
Can the tablet be used to stream from a Wii U? Abandoning the old Wii U Gamepad?
What is inside the dock? Only a "HDMI" and charger? Or there is a External HardDrive/cartidge slot on it?
What kind of OS we got in this thing? It will be able to do normal thing like a tablet or it will exclusively run games?
What about region lock? With that much freedom to take your device anywhere it would be a shame that you couldn't buy games at any store in the world

Speaking for myself, I've got a high-end PC sitting on my desk hooked up to a 4K TV already, I've got the bleeding-edge stuff covered. I want a console mostly just to play Nintendo games, and I want a portable with much sharper graphics than the 3DS. This covers both those use cases. Not to mention it might have some form of PC integration, such as gamestream.

Yeah, I'm not saying it will scare away all console players, but I think quite a few will pass on it.
Of course, like you said, Nintendo fans will definitely (have to) buy it, since the Switch rules out a new dedicated handheld too, so that leaves them with a large amount of people buying it. The market for the WiiU was not nearly as big as that.

No doubt that Nintendo its always trying to be in the first place when we talking about "gaming experience". This new console sure seems to be interesting but also "a little odd", we can ask: "how much can be gained with this?" but also we can ask: "how much needs to be sacrifice?".

We need to wait to see the technical specs of this, not to see if can compete with the PS4/XboxONE but to see if it are at the "standars" of the industry... The idea of taking HD games whatever you like its something that "must be" in the gaming industry in a near future...

I am an old Nintendo fanatic and their games are really the best. Touching a Nintendo game after months of playing on a ps4, i could immediately understand the difference. However (and for many people this will be a big however) i do *not* get the point of Nintendo not competing with the likes of PS4 pro and Xbox Scorpio power. Competing does not mean you are the same. It means you provide a competent platform, so everybody can use as small or as big of that performance they want. If Nintendo wants to make cell shaded Zeldas until the sun does not shine, fine. But i am sure that some of the 3rd parties simply did not engage with nintendo the last few years for reasons of architecture (Wiiu) and power (Wii). I mean, the Wii did have a Call of Duty, but it was a watered down version, nothing like the original. Add to that Rockstar and probably others and you have the usual chicken and egg problem with Nintendo, where 3rd parties will not release massively popular titles to their consoles, meaning less 'common joes' will buy them, meaning less sales in total. It is all a self-harming process and unless they can manage to compete 'up there' in the specs race, their market will always be their true following and never people who might become fans merely because they bought it for Call of Duty, only to find it has more to offer than the competition. This is exactly why the Snes was so great, it had all the Nintendo magic, yet it was at the top of the chain, meaning you could get your hands on all the fifas your heart desired -> win. /rant over

I like the switch with all its shortcomings though (for me). But i will never play it out, so the only added thing for me here is the ability to play in the bed? If you put this over having a powerful and more marketable console, i strongly prefer the second, even if some of the mainstream games i would not even touch from a mile away.

On the other hand, i do not understand the stupid obsession with nintendo not supporting new formats/protocols/what is to come quickly. Many of you think 4k is really far away and nintendo thought the same about full hd with the wii. Yet, no longer than 1-2 years in the lifespan of the wii, everybody and their dog had a full hd tv, where the wii really looked like ageing. All i am saying is, nintendo, stop waiting until something is really everywhere, until you support it. Things move and i am sure in 1-2 years time, everybody and their dog will have a 4k tv. We are almost at the point where more than half of new tvs introduced are 4k! I myself have one, because i am an early adopter and i like what it is. Nintendo not offering support for it (possibly, i guess) the only thing it does is shoot themselves in the foot once again. The only good thing now is that good 4k tvs have upscalers of their own, that will help keep the issue to a minimum. Think of it, you can now have a 55" 4k enabled tv for around £500 (for the cheapest one), it will not take long for them to be mainstream. Unless they want to release a second version with a higher res support down the line (more $$$ folks)... Think of it. Amazon and Netflix support 4k already and most tv/movies will be available on the format before the end of the year. Same goes with the Ps4 and Xbox (hell, even the Ps4 slim and Xbox 1 slim do now!).

I really, really hope Nintendo will be number 1 again. Or else, we are buying consoles for only 5-10 games every generation. That is at least my experience with the Wii and the Wiiu so far. Shame. And i do have the money to spare to have 2 or all of them, so i can still play everything. But i would really like to have ONE console to rule them all and that one being made by Nintendo, where i could have most of what is out there, bar sony/ms exclusives.

Will i buy it? Yes. Will i buy it on the first day or soon after? Doubtful.

Wow, I just realized something, not sure if anyone else has mentioned this possibility or not. But if Nintendo has any interest in VR, they'd probably be able to achieve it at an affordable price, though it'd be more in line of what VR is on our smartphones, so something like the Gear VR. It'd be so simple, you just slide the screen into a unit like the Gear VR, and the screen displays 2 images: one for each eye, and using motion sensors can track your head movement. If the Joy-Con controllers have motion sensors, then bam, you have you're in-game "hands" that can be tracked. That seems super feasible to me, its kind of crazy.

I just want to add these couple facts

  • The Xbox One S can't play games in 4k, just video
  • The Switch can theoretically support 4k resolution as well (not likely for games but I wouldn't be surprised for video)
  • Many games on the PS4 and Xbox One don't really run at 1080p but rather upscaled from 720p or 900p, I'm assuming the "4k" consoles will be similar...
    • If you want raw power just get a gaming PC... $500 will get you gaming in 4k at console level framerates or 1080p at 60+fps (but don't buy a pre-built!), that can play at 4k right now and will give you a better looking game in many cases.
      • You could also use a "refurbished" PC as a starting point and upgrade the GPU and RAM for a potentially cheaper or better computer
      • Plus, it's a computer...
In the end, game consoles are just watered down PCs with a controller and the incremental upgrades show just that...

The downside to consoles trying to be a PC is that every time you "upgrade" you have to pay full price for the whole package rather than just replacing the part that needs to be upgraded...

Nintendo is at least trying to differentiate itself (and not charging $500~ is a good way to get more sales...)

I can personally see myself getting the Switch on or near day one due to the fact that it's a (semi)-portable system with console quality graphics (even if it IS somewhere between current and last-gen...)

I have a gaming PC so I've got the high-end games covered... games aren't just about resolution though...

I could also see GameCube backwards compatibility even though people say it won't have enough power...

The NVIDIA Shield can emulate GameCube / Wii almost perfectly and the Switch will likely be more powerful than that...

The only thing they'd need for Wii emulation would be a sensor bar and remotes (which being Bluetooth...)

Wii U backwards compatibility however... unless they allow a Wii U gamepad I can't see it even being possible... I could see them adding backwards compatibility for the SDK so all developers would need to do is re-compile and change the controls...

Im my opinion, I think you and alot of other people are putting too much belief in that the newest "hardware" should always be the most powerful and bleeding edge there is. You don't pay the "hardware", you play the games. A game is like a good book, or movie, or television show. It's there for the entertainment. If Nintendo released a brand new game for say the SNES, and it was of a game franchise that has had a huge following or is an up-in-comer that is building in popularity, I bet it would sell like hot cakes.

The moral to my rant is that if the software isn't there, then what is the point?

Yeah.... That sucks. So basically, Zelda will be gimped on Switch. Its like Nintendo keeps taking one step forward and two steps back.

How is zelda Gimped on the Switch? The lack of the second screen? Sounds like a solution for the start or select button.
