I own both and think they are both great but i use a grip so shape and what not makes no difference so the OLED vita 1000 model wins hands down.

All models are compatible with henkaku (1000,2000, PSTV), I have one of each and havnt had any issues. The console just needs to be running firmware 3.6 or below and you're good.

The colours on the 1000 are much nicer, however mine (and many others) have noticeable 'black splotches' where parts of the screen are darker than others.
For me it's only visible on lower brightness settings and when playing in a dark room (low ambient light).

I still prefer the 1000 myself. The blacks are blacker and colours are just so much richer :)
You can really see it when you have the two side by side:

If getting a used console, just go into the settings | system | system information and make sure its on firmware 3.6 or below.
Any new console should be under 3.6.

Then follow this process to upgrade to firmware 3.6 if http://wololo.net/2016/08/09/manually-update-ps-vita-firmware-3-60/
DO NOT upgrade via the normal method on the vita or you'll get firmware 3.61 and be locked out of henkaku.

u get a extra hour of play with the SLIM ... but 4 to 5 hours on the OLED is plenty for me...
Looks like i'm lucky to have OLED model psvita. I bought it from a seller for just 60$ about 6 to 7months ago. I don't know correct model no#. But I think it is PCH1104.

Model doesn't matter.

You need firmware 3.60 or less. You are unlikely to get a Vita with higher than 3.60 at retail yet so just buy any.

I went for the OLED one because it was highly praised everywhere and was very disappointed with the mura effect. Maybe I was unlucky since it is just very noticeable on my screen and covers a big part of it but it is damn ugly and irritating, it bothers me a lot. I will never buy anything with an OLED display again.
Also, the OLED screens are more prone to degradation than the LCD ones, so it does not make sense to buy a device with a degradable display which are you going to use for pirating all the games. You would want it to last. Moreover, if you can’t compare OLED to IPS directly side by side you’ll never know the difference.
Vita Slim has better design: the leds are on the top side, you can’t see them normally, start/select buttons are easier to use, screen is glass instead of plastic, μUSB instead of a proprietary port, IPS screen uses less power, the system weighs less, it’s thinner, it’s slim, you know. It does not feel as sturdy as the Fat one, but it does not really matter.
I bought a Vita Slim and I think it’s superior. Extra 1GB of internal memory is useful too: e.g. you can keep emulators / ROMs there, just pop out the memory card and you'll be able to use it. The greatest advantage for me is no more irritating mura which drove me nuts.

I know my vita has the mura thing, but I can really only see it when the screen is completely black and when i'm in a dark room. So really the only time i'd see it would be during a black screen, in the dark.

It's personal preference I guess, but it shouldn't be much of a bother if you use it in a normal environment instead of in the dark.
Either that or your vita's oled screen was really messed up.

You’re right, it can be seen on dark / backgrounds only, sorry for not making it clear. I’ve only got one small spot that can be seen almost every time. Yeah, but I prefer to play in a dark/twilight environment.

1000 uses a proprietary charging cable. The slim uses micro usb.

I prefer the 1000 by far. The screen is better and Idk if this has already been mentioned, but the build quality is also better. The slim has this, like, plastic feel to it.
if its like psp im ok with it

The 2000 is slimmer, lighter, battery lasts longer, has 1GB built-in memory (great for people who preffer physical instead of digital) and it takes a microUSB charger, it really is an improvement over the 1000.

The 1000 screen is better but unless you have both systems side by side you would never now there is any difference.

I have both, I suggest you to just go for a new 2000 system and enjoy it, you won't regret it ;)

Hmm, well I guess it's up to preference. No matter which one you pick, I think you'll enjoy it.

The screen on the 1000 is noticeably better, especially on games with bright colors, but you'd only notice if you've played both.

You should try to see them in person so you can decide for yourself.

Oh, and also you can't use the 1GB on the slim in conjunction with a card. You either use the 1GB or a memory card.

what do you mean?
The slim comes with 1GB of storage built in, but you can't use it while you're using a memory card.

So if you buy a 4GB card, you can only use the 4GB. It will not add up to 5GB. It's pretty silly.

If you're gonna use henkaku I don't think 1GB will cut it.
