J.J. Abrams confirms Portal movie still in development, announcement coming "fairly soon"

Three years ago at a keynote event at D.I.C.E. 2013, movie director J.J. Abrams had revealed that he was working with Valve in order to produce movie adaptations of Portal and Half-Life. However, after that initial announcement, no word has been spoken about either project since then. That was, until today, where Abrams had an interview with IGN, in which he stated the following:

"We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon" [...] "We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom...once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things. As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal, what’s the movie of this, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing."

I can see this falling into the usual video game issues if they're not careful.

I think a portal movie has potential thanks to it's plot/setting but I could see it easily going wrong if handled incorrectly e.g. trying to make it 'darker and edgier' without the comedy or too light.

Given that it's Abrams (and maybe Valve), I'm hoping that it's something they'll give a **** about to make something at least decent.

Well, as long as they stick to the backstory of Portal, and not the events of the game itself I think it could work. That is me being optimistic. The harsh reality is that it will likely turn out to be shit like practically every other video game movie out there.

Still, Valve has proven themselves to be capable of defying the odds, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt for now.

I guess this is kind of exciting. It's no Portal 3 but I guess Valve's at least letting those that actually CARE do something about the IP, whether it's a game or not.

The half-life movie will just end in the 2nd act.

Also, portal and half-life have silent protagonist. How you handle that transition is either going to make or break it.

Hey Kids, do you like Portal?

"Yay!"

Do you like going to the movies?

"Yaaay!"

Do you like it when J. J. "Franchise-destroyer" Abrams voids his bowels over everything you hold dear?

"..."

Well you are in luck kids! Your favorite garbage-eater is ready to rape your most beloved intellectual properties into complete submission!
Watch in awe as he turns Star Trek into pointless action set-pieces and Star Wars into a huge circle-jerk that doesn't even have the decency to call itself a "remake" when it blatantly steals the entire story of Episode IV!
No one has the talent of Abrams to take something brilliant and nuanced and turn it into something more casual and boring than a quiet sunday-afternoon dickpull-contest!

Valve should make a movie about how Lord Gabe steals all your money since you are addicted to Steam.
Hey, I'm not addicted to Steam! Last time I bought something with my own money I bought... What did I buy again?

SHIT, IT WAS A GAME I BOUGHT OFF OF STEAM
AND SAME WITH THE TIME BEFORE THAT
