It is only safe if you understand what you are doing or at least following instructions properly. You're modifying your only way out of a brick without a hardmod, and if you brick it because you made your 3ds read a payload that doesn't work, you'll need a hardmod to fix it

Do so at your own risk.

Seconded. I bricked my New3DS by being a total turd and accidentally using the v1 updater with v2 payloads. Shipped it out to hardmod by Milerwan recently tho.

Updating A9LH is NOT save, the way the A9LHInstaller works is by injecting the payload into the FIRM partitions. By installing the new A9LH it places multiple payloads in the FIRM and will brick you.

don't bother

In contrary to the tldr version of these comments being "only do it when you know what you're doing" however I can say, just follow plailect's guide like the sheep we are and you're good. (p.s. this part of the guide was made after I bricked)

Yes, there's a small risk due to the battery falling out at the wrong time or such. This is no different than installing an official kernel update.

Then there's user error, but how to correctly update is documented.

Changing to Luma is literally swapping out approx 5 files on your SD card with 0 modifications to your system. The short version is as follows (this assumes that you are using arm9loaderhax or a9lh for short!!)

To remove from SD root:
  • aurei folder
  • arm9loaderhax.bin
  • aureinand.dat

To put on SD root:
  • luma folder
    • create folder called 'payloads' in the Luma folder
    • Download hourglass9 from here: https://github.com/d0k3/Hourglass9/releases/latest
    • From the zip file move Hourglass9.bin to the just created payloads folder
    • Rename Hourglass9.bin to start_hourglass9.bin
  • arm9loaderhax.bin
For more info please refer to the installation and upgrade wiki page on the Luma3DS github: https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/wiki/Installation-and-Upgrade
And also always keep Plailect's guide handy for all information: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki
