it seems a bit un popular i guess, i don't think many people would use it.
maybe porting something like fbreader or koreader would be the best avenue to take if someone really wanted this - but unless a dev with the time really wants to do this... i don't seem it happening.
i don't have a wiiu, can you browse webpages on the gamepad? i guess you could just read them online, maybe there is some nice reader website where you can upload books etc, i'm not sure.

but, i recommend just to get an (eink) ereader, they can be really cheap if you are worried about price.

The Internet Browser can read PDF :)
Just use a software like XAMPP for self-hosting PDFs ;)

Well, in short, you can use it in two ways :
first with an external HDD (you can use internal, but I suggest external for better browsing of media files)
second with a cloud

What you have to do is to run a Plex Media Server (also called PMS on Plex forums) on your computer, and create library about where your media files are. For example, I have a library for my anime, one for my French dubbed series, and one for my French subbed series.
Then it will scan all your media files, which may take time if you have a lot (I have around 2TB of media files, and last time I scanned them all at once, it tooks about 1 hour)
While it scans, you can download the Plex client on your plateform, Wii U and PC are the only ones that doesnt requires a client since they use the browser.
Then, you go to Plex.tv/pin to sync your server to your plateform.
And there you go, you can read all your media files on your console

EDIT : BTW, I never used the cloud system, so I don't know how to use it
EDIT2 : www.plex.tv

Hey, if you're interested in an ebook reader, I highly recommend the nook simple touch.
They're super cheap and can be rooted to use android apps, including the kindle app. It's like having a kindle and a nook.

Kindles are alright, but they don't support epubs.

i prefer kindle, but yes no native epub support is annoying... but, not necessary really because kf8 (2nd latest kindle ebook format) is basically epub, so you can convert them very easily with a program like calibre.

running real android on nook is very cool though, it's technically possible on kindle but you need to pay this chinese dude to do it to your kindle (you send it to him and he hacks it for you, or you buy his prehacked kindles) - legally it is supposed to be open source but yeah he's in china so not much will happen to him :D

Yeah, I had a kindle before and it was pretty good. I would use calibre, too. It was a little big, though, because it had a keyboard.

Rooting the nook is super easy. You just have to put some files on an sd card.

I can see the Wii U gamepad being a really good thing to read on. I have a couple of epub books I want to read and I want to read them on Wii U gamepad.

why? because it has a screen?
i mean, what makes you think it would be 'very good' to read on? you can have your opinion, i just don't understand it :) (so i'm asking why)
Oh, I just like the design of the gamepad. To me it feels really good to hold. Much better than holding something like a kindle. I can use the joysticks to move the eBook instead of touching the screen. Just a design preference.

too slow?
two possibilities : slow PC, slow internet connection
slow pc because it must convert video to make them compatible with your plateform.
I have a 3.4GHz 4core CPU and it work perfectly, I can even runs 3 client and play games at the same time.
