I have a Iomega mdhd500-ue 500GB USB drive that I use to store my Gamecube games for use on the Wii. It works fine on my main Wii no problems, recently I've picked up a second Wii. I've done the softmod and everything else works fine but my Iomega drive just will not work with it. It will freeze during Initializing USB device. It does the same in Configurable USB loader. During loading the blue light on the front of the HD will go off and the Wii will freeze.

I know it isn't a problem with the drive because it works fine on my other Wii. My Wii games HD works fine with this second wii and putting GC games on a USB stick works, the only problem is with the Iomega drive and I'm not sure what the problem could be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've searched for other people having this issue but didn't find a solution. Thanks

Perhaps the drive is malfunctioning? Or maybe it's a power problem; I've had this many times before with my Wii. Try connecting to 2 USB ports for double power with something like this:

I don't believe that is the problem, the drive I'm using is one that also plugs in with an AC adapter. The drive works perfectly on one Wii no problem, but on the other Wii it will just not work! I've tried reformatting and everything I can think of but have had no luck with it. It isn't just with USB Loader GX either, any loader I try will not work with it. I even tried WiiXplorer to see if it could see the files on it but have the same issue. I'm stumped as to why it would work fine on the PC and the other Wii but not with this one! The main thing I know that is different is the Wii it works on is System menu 4.1U and the one it doesn't work on is System menu 4.3U. But my other drive with Wii games on it work on both consoles. I have no idea what the issue could be!

It's pretty obvious it's the Wii's problem. Try another HDD and a USB and here are the scenarios:
1. in that case try finding an EXACT same model as your current HDD.
2. USB works but HDD doesn't: In this case, it's probably the power, even if you are using an AC adapter. But an AC adapter should help shouldn't it?
3. None work: Your USB port(s) are dead or your use port controller is dead.

Try as many different drives, USBs, etc as possible to narrow down the issue.

Don't use WBFS partitions unless you don't care if your games get corrupted. That's terrible advice.

EDIT: That drive is listed in the USB hardware compatibility list.

IOMEGA MDHD500-UE 500GB / ST3500830AS / Doesn't work / Tested with WiiFlow and USB LOADER GX

I have a different HD which also uses an AC adapter and it works fine on the Wii which the Iomega doesn't work. I've also tried 3 different USB stick ranging 8-16GB and they work fine as well. The power issue could be possible, but I don't understand why it would get enough power on one Wii and not the other. I'll try the dual USB cable if I can get my hands on one. The drive also has a blue light on the front which is always on when the drive is on, when the Wii tries to mount the drive the blue light goes off, and I have to switch the drive on and off to get it back on. Which never happens on the PC or other Wii. I'd really like to get this drive working on this Wii but at this point it would probably be easier to just switch the Wiis with each other.

Perhaps the AC power for your Iomega HDD doesn't work properly so try getting a dual USB. If that works, then it's your AC power not working for sure :)
