I have a phat ps2 and I'm using Verbatim 52x 700mb CD-R's and having problems loading games sometimes. I have a 50% chance of a game actually working and when it doesn't my console makes a loud noise like its trying to read the disk over and over. Sometimes even when a game loads up it fails to read the disk at points. Ive tried multiple games with multiple burn speeds (I know 4x and below is preferred). Is it a problem with the CDs or maybe my laser? I can play PS2 backups just fine.

I'd day it's a lazer/discdrive issues if it's making a Loud noise. if it has problems with retail games and not just your verbatim copies. I'd say it's the lazer dying or possibly the disk drive? and would suggest purchasing another one and replace it to see if it fixes the issue. (I'd go the disc drive route as if you replace the lazer and find out the disc drive isn't spinning discs properly etc etc. and it wasn't the lazer you end up not wasting money and having to spend money on another discdrive/lazer combo.)

**tip**
depending on the model of PS2 you can remove the top of the disc drive (plastic plate) and like I mentioned depending on model you can somewhat easily manage to do this. the last thing you need once taking off the top is to see if the round white piece that fits on top of a cd to hold it in place is able to be taken out or is it one piece (round white thing is inside the disc drive plastic top piece being 1piece) if it's one piece you have to pull it out and then you can set that on top of a cd while it spins and look inside the discdrive from the top and maybe pinpoint where the sounds coming from. (caution as this can ruin the lazer more but it's a good troubleshooting start to the problem. try at own risk)

Edit: or look into a network adapter and a HDD and read your games from a HDD with "freemcboot" no more cds /bad lazer/headaches :D I personally have a PHAT ps2 with this method and I bought a IDE to usb to connect drive to pc to transfer games.

No it plays retail ps1 games just fine. I'm only having issues with PSX backups. Everything, including ps2 back-ups, works just fine so it shouldn't be the laser (At least I hope it isn't)

oh, I'm a little slow at times. I thought you meant all backups in general my apologies...

it may just be the psxlauncher.elf I know it's very picky with which models it works on. I never was able to get it to work on my model. I know some models you can just insert a retail psone disc in the menu highlight the disc do the swap trick and it should still say psone disc and you might be able to load it that way?

with psone backups on my ps2 I eventually gave up as my model is the 3001 and this model can't do the above method and like I said psxlauncher would not work for my model. Idk why? it just caused me frustration and a headache.

I also heard of pops0001 the official emu found in a demo game. it's supposedly working but requires hex modification to games etc. again I never got this to work either...

sorry I can't be much of help :/
