So I've got 2x N3DS XL (setting up one for a friend) and I have installed A9LH on both, mine about 2 weeks ago, and friend's just yesterday.

With the changes in the guide, mine is running 9.2 sys with 10.7 emu with AuR booting directly to emuNAND. With this setup I can hold L, boot the 9.2 firm and enter GW mode (easier ram dumping and currently better cheat system).

I thought I would use my friend's (10.7 sys AuR, no emunand) to test out if its possible to still load GW with the current A9LH preferred setup method.

When I power the system on with L or R pressed, I am greeted with "An error had occurred: No emuNAND has been detected. Press and button to shutdown"

Holding down both L and R boots Decrypt9 as expected.

Is the firmware90.bin file useless without an emuNAND?

Ok, so it appears I miss-read the notes for AuReiNand.

I wonder if it is possible to boot sysnand using firmware90 using an updated sysnand in the same way we could in emunand?

Although that's not possible, but let's assume it is.. Then what? How would you be looking to boot to gateway emunand if the system has no emunand?

You can't boot to any emuNAND if you don't have emuNAND. That's just how it works.
Booting to Gateway sysNAND is an entirely different story.

I hadn't thought that far ahead tbh...

I guess it would require modifying the GW loader to patch the sysnand and load over it, rather than the emunand.
Considering GW is closed source, it isn't possible to make the modifications. Guess we are either stuck with having a 9.2 sys with emu, or GW adding a9lh support.

I know that.. I'm asking him what he's trying to do..
I was thinking of ways to try and use the GW red cart with the preferred A9LH setup, which has no emumand.

Booting an updated sysnand with the firmware90.bin might be possible with changes to AuReiNand.
The next issue is, does GW Mode even work without an emunand, or is the Red cart going to try and load a nonexistent emunand?

Sadly doesn't work that way. You can't firmlaunch a system below what's actually installed on the console as the system relies on much more than just NATIVE_FIRM. (so basically you're console on A9LH sysNAND would have to be 9.2 or lower)

GW mode does work without an emuNAND. However on this edge case, you need an emuNAND to boot GW, so if you let it go automatically, it wouldn't work. You'd have to manually hold L, then press B, then X to boot into sysNAND.

You'd need an emunand. My setup has that -- 10.7 sysnand patched w/ aureinand via a9lh, and I hold L on boot to boot my 9.0 emunand with firmware90.bin using aureinand when I want to use GW.

In 9.0 emu I can launch gw (I do via hbl loader cia, using GW's recent 3dsx, though you could use that w/ menuhax if you preferred, or some other gw entry point), and it will load that same 9.0 emu w/ gateway capability. It does work to use gw w/ 10.7 sysnand as mentioned above, (hold L as GW firm launches to access menu, hold B to change the option that loads emunand to sysnand, hit X when it tells you to confirm after choosing the sysnand option), but not much of a point to that -- since you need the 9.0 fw to launch it as of now, might as well run it on that, too; GW fw spoofing is great, so recent games work, etc.

What you have to do, is make a 9.2 emunand. Problem solved.

BUT... you in no way need an emunand to use a Gateway. It has sysnand mode as well, but it's just not auto... you have to hold L while booting GW to get into the GW menu to launch sysnand mode. It's actually kind of a pain :/

Huh? No..? You are talking about classic mode right? That doesn't have multirom menu (which is the whole point of gateway..)

No. I'm talking about Gateway mode in sysnand. GW team added that several versions ago. In the menu, hold B down on Gateway mode before pressing A (while still holding B). It's GW mode sysnand.

nope gateway sysnand mode, its a thing and has multirom menu.

Hey.. When did this happen?

lol thanks for the info guys :)
