There is a homebrew in development that plays videos

https://github.com/Lectem/3Damnesic

You have to build it yourself and it runs on *hax, there is a CIA *hax loader though https://github.com/yellows8/hblauncher_loader/releases

Do also note that it's very early in development, there is no audio or file browser (you have to specify the video path in the code before compiling).

It plays H.264 and MPEG4, on Old 3DS at 400x240 MPEG4 gets about 37 FPS which should be fine as most content is 24 FPS or 30 FPS. H.264 gets 16 FPS, so use MPEG4. New 3DS should get 60 FPS on either codec.

This other guy above me has no idea what he's talking about and is helping nobody.

Sunshell supports video playback for bmpv and jpgv videos. Though Sunshell tends to be slow and unstable for me for now. Still Rinnegatamante has done some good work and it'll probably be worth keeping an eye on Sunshell even if only for video playback. I can't really think of a reason to use a shell on my 3DS otherwise.

The camera app isn't too bad. I just watched monsters U in 3D on my 3DS recently :-) The only downside is the labels on the top and bottom of the screen, and the fact it is limited to 10 minute clips (and I don't think you can rewind/fast forward).

Depends what you want it for. If you don't want to bring your laptop traveling with you, then it's the only option you have if you want to watch a movie. If you think the effort is so great you'd rather just not be able to watch any movies then ... well, up to you

I think a tablet will do just fine for that, maybe everyone doesn't want to carry around alot of devices on vacation BUT that is what a vacation is for, to take your mind off of everyday stuff and enjoy some outdoor fun. The only thing you should have is just your phone.

Um, what about a phone? The screen on the 3DS is 3.53" and 4.88" on the XL.
Most phones have a larger screen, higher resolution, and powerful enough GPU to decode HD video.

Meh, I'd watch animated (or other simple videos) 3D videos on the 3ds just for the 3d if there were a simple to use converter and viewer, but it's just too much of a bother right now.

I have an iPhone and an iPad with built in, limited memory. I forget that other people have Samsung products with exchangeable SD cards :-( I don't normally take my iPad travelling since I wouldn't really use it and it's more breakable than phone/3ds.

You know there's a few dozen other companies that make better tablets than those miserable Samsung things?
They're almost as overpriced as the iPad.

There's a solution for that, too. You can use a Kingston G2 Mobilelite Wireless Reader or equivalent and watch though it via wifi.

EDIT: if you want to know how it works, i'll use it again, it's been a while.
