I have numerous questions about what I am seeing here. Does clicking on the boss character portraits actually select them as a "fighter"? And if so, do they actually load outside of their regular levels?

They load as Mario. Soneek showed it off in a previous video stream.

Hey @soneek, I have a quick question. So, Smash 4 is built off the same engine as Super Smash Bros. Brawl (under the Havoc engine.) How hard would it be to port things from Brawl into Smash 4 such as stages or even Characters for that matter? Just generally curious.

I'm not sure if soneek is the right person to ask, he's all about sound modifing.
Anyway, it depends on how things work, the 2 games using the same engine doesn't mean they work the same way, and if they do, we'll have to write BRRES to BFRES, MDL0 to FMDL, TEX0 to FTEX, ETC..., converters.

Alright so I heard after spoofing to 5.5.0 you can go online using disc but what about updates? Like I know you can download updates but will it effect my physical copy of smash? or do i need to download the game and add the updates?

it won't effect your physical copy in anyway. just use wup installer for your updates, if anything goes wrong you can always check/delete the update via system menu.

you can use your copy, you just need to use nus grabber to get your updates instead of via eshop.

go research WUP installer, you can only play online with disks or genuine eshop digital copies, but you need to install the games updates first ia wup installer

It isn't specific. I get how to update games because it shows you but it doesn't clearly explain how to update your console. Or i'm probably not seeing it. But here's a screenshot of what I'm about to do.

Do not use the gui, it's broken atm. you're going to have to use the command line to download the smash updates. use "NUSGrabber.exe 0005000E10144F00 192" in the same folder as nus grabber (non gui). You should wait for like 5 min or so to be sure that the title gets installed without issues.

The issue is how it accesses title names, though. There's another one being developed right now that will grab title names and update info directly from Nintendo's servers
