Is there a tool to convert my legally owned 3ds games on carts to cia format so I may
be able to install them on my SD card and not worry about them? Looked all over but there only seems to be 3dz format.

I believe 3dz can simply be renamed to .3ds and used with the standard 3DStoCIA toolkit floating around out there, after obtaining the xorpads through rxtools.

It actually sounds pretty complicated at first, but only takes about 5 minutes in practice one you are aware of all the steps and know what you are doing.

The hardest part is the transferring of files between the 3ds and PC several times.
Yeah, the only challenging part is trying to read the broken English. Nothing against the guy, I get English isn't his native language, but that doesn't make it any easier to read.

Do i really need a ds flashcart?
I don't recall a ds mode flashcart being needed for anything but mset exploit setting techniques to launch rxtools.
I haven't checked the guides linked, but you shouldn't need one if you can already boot rxtools through another entrypoint.

It should be as simple as generating a file from the .3ds with the ciatool, putting that file on your 3ds, using rx tools to generate xorpads from that file, transferring xorpads to your pc and using the ciatool to convert the 3ds file+xorpads to a cia.

I gotcha, yeah I have rxTools set up to boot emunand on system power on so im about to make some backups of my games.

One more quick question if you can help me with it, I can updated my 3ds firmware on emunand via 3ds settings?

That's generally the best way to update your emunand FW with an old3ds. N3ds can't yet go past 9.5 emunand.

You'd want to boot in straight to the settings in emunand and make sure it reads RX 9.blahblah so that you know you are in emunand.
You might want to unlink your nands before updating your emunand though, as there have been rare reports in the past of linked nands causing sysnand to update as well.

Yeah I'm running rxTools on my Japanese 3ds, I followed a guide that used the gateway launcher to unlink my nand and then i formatted the 3ds as well so I think im good

Should be primed for a safe update in emunand system settings then!
