Hacking Some concerns about how automatic updates work

1. When an update is downloading, does it appear in the download management (And not silently in the background with NO way of seeing it)?

2. Once the download of the update begins, does it remain in downloads management AT the same percentage forever, and will only increase with each time you're connected to the internet? Basically once you see it there, you KNOW it's begun.

3. I see absolutely nothing in my downloads management, does that mean the update has never begun downloading on my system at all? I have the update servers blocked so it's hard to tell if it's been working, but I've never seen anything in my downloads management so far.

4. Can I use the update remover (http://wj44.bplaced.net/remove_update/) even if I have no update downloading, to be on the safe side?

1- yes it does appear on download management but if you dont click on download management you wont see it downloading anyway lol.

2-it will stay there and continue resuming until its 100%.

3-yup the download hasnt started downloading if system update isnt there, sometimes the wiiu takes awhile to check if download is available or not or even the nintendo servers could be down i know yesterday nintendo network was down for afew hours for maintenance.

4-if nothing is there nothing is gonna be removed lol.

When my dns settings messed them selfs up, I noticed the update pop up and went and fixed it by switching off and setting tubehax back up. Now when I press the download management window the bar gets about an inch across the %bar then fails. Is this because it downloaded small amount before I switched off? On some YouTube videos I've seen where others have show the management download section it just fails at 0% for them.

Should I be worried about the small amount it did grab? Can I clear it?

This "Automatic" update is REAL. There's absolutely no way to turn it off either. I finally got the update in download management. BUT it has a red X, and I'm using a proxy.
I had a panic scare because I was setting up CCproxy, which wasn't connecting to the internet for some reason. I noticed my gamepad was glitching, then all of a sudden it disconnected, as if my system rebooted. I ran SO fast to go power it off!!! Turns out that I was too far from the system.


My last question about updates: Do the updates download ONLY while you're in the home menu, or does it pause when you're in-game or in the internet browser?


Edit: So I used the update remover and it brings me back to the menu when you press the home button. The update is still in downloads management with a red X. It didn't even remove it! Or will it be gone on a reboot?

Mine only started to update when I closed the game I was playing. But that may be setup in the download/update settings.

How far is the progress bar on yours when you check it and get the red X Matt?

I was actually looking for a way to check the overall progress of it, couldn't find anything. I did notice an empty bar so it pretty much got 0%. I had the updates blocked from the very beginning (2 days ago lol)

I use a proxy from an Italian forum called Reboot. It literally works to block updates. I guess no matter what you use to block the updates, a update will ALWAYS show up in download management. But as a red x and will never download and make progress.

Maybe closing out of games is a bad idea, you should just hold the power button and turn it off that way while still in-game. As soon as you turn it on again, instantly go to browser, then boot up loadiine as usual. Never go back to the home menu.

Also I have a few settings disabled within settings, such as automatic software downloads, standby features is off. So maybe with those settings done, closing the game won't be so dangerous.

EDIT: Seems like deactivating downloads in download management is a good way to avoid ANYTHING from downloading until it's time to reboot. I'd say go to downloads management upon turning the system on and deactivating every time, then you will pretty much be safe from then on. It reactivates upon reboot so you have to do this once every time. This is also a good way to keep track of updates. If you notice progress on the update, use the update remover to reset it to 0%. This is just a theory though. But based on the description, it disables any downloads until you reboot the console.

Edit2: Someone should really make a dedicated topic about how updates work, and sticky it. Updates are a serious matter!

it works, i know what you're talking about though. i ran it a few times myself not thinking it was doing anything, randomly tried again one day, mines back at 0%. Not sure when it happened.

Tried both the wj44 page and the other one (something with RU in the link i think) but it did nothing.

I don't think it removes the update from your download management, but if you have ANY kind of progress going on with it, you can reset it to 0%. It'll always remain in your download management forever, haunting you. But a red X is a great sign for comfort.
I'm gonna always go to download management, and pause + Deactivate downloads so while I'm doing anything else on the Wii U, I have a peace of mind.

Aside from deactivate, what about the other option, that says "Pause"?

Also an idea, what if I boot up the exploit. Then do MAC filtering on my router so that it can no longer be connected to the internet. Good idea or not possible? Then I'd have to unblock the MAC address each time I turn it on. Not too much of a hassle.

I've gone with tubehax and Ethernet adaptor. I will see if it's any better and I can pull it after I launch the exploit.

The adapter idea is only good if you plan on using the Wii U, in the same room as the router ALWAYS. And you're not allowed to have any wireless connections configured on the system. Your only connection has to be that one wired connection. It sucks for me since the router isn't in my room, so the whole idea sucks in my case. The range of the gamepad completely sucks. It can't even go more than 10 feet away or else it starts glitching, literally.

I might return the USB to ethernet adapter I bought since it won't work out for me as well as I thought.

Buy a pair of plug socket Ethernet adaptors, you can have Ethernet access where ever a wall socket is.
