Why would you need to update? Stay on as low a firmware as possible for as long as you can. You can always upgrade later if you want to, but you can't downgrade again. So if a new exploit becomes available for 9.9, you can't go back.

For eshop and badge :(
 
and if eshop access is more important to you then a possible future exploit then update. Just don't forget to update your payloads before hand so you can keep your Homebrew ;)

Well, I'm on 10.2 and if I attempt to launch the eShop from the system home menu I am told I have to update first. However, if I launch it through HANS it works fine.
That is because 10.2 has NVer of -28, so it works fine through HANS fw spoof. Anything 10.1 or lower won't work.
 
Someone else apparently has a solution for accessing the eShop on 10.1 or lower without updating, though, so you may want to wait until that is released, if it does work.
