Tonight I went through an exhausting and long process of installing cfw (I guess the only reason it hasn't been even more difficult for me is because I haven't yet looked into such things as unlinking nands and what have you), and now I'm at a bit of a loss as to how I should proceed from here.

I updated emunand to the recentest one (10.3) and that's where I'm frozen right now - I have DevMenu.cia on the root of my SD card and a .cia in the same place, and I'm wondering if everything is right - use RxTools to get into emunand, open DevMenu.cia and then somehow use it to install the "big" game .cia?

Did I get everything figured out? Am I not about to do something dangerous?

Yes it is safe.

In order to install a cia, you have to get access to a cia installer.

You can use FBI injection.

You could have used Ninjhax 1.1 + FBI.3dsx in emunand before updating it to install Dev Menu.

Do I have to stare at Installation Data Suite everytime I load RxTools, or just everytime I add something new to the SD Card?

So I'm inside RxTools right now and I'm guessing I'm supposed to install DevMode first?

Other Options -> Install FBI over Health&Safety App is the way to go?

or... Inject Options -> Inject EmuNAND partitions / NAND files (none of these ring a bell for me)? halp

1) That's only the first time you use it.

2) You don't install Dev Mode, you meant Dev Menu perhaps... I recommend using Big Blue Menu.

3)Try that, I only did manual injection in the past, never with rxTools.

4) Don't do this, this is something totally unrelated.

No, DevMode is for basically downgrading your console. Don't worry about that. Boot EmuNand, install said installer (Usually you need to inject with FBI if you don't have a Gateway. ) ( BBM, FBI, DevMenu, Title Manager.) and select the CIA you want installed. Games take around 30-120 minutes. So, be patient.

She hasn't installed any cia manager yet...

I just d/l Big Blue Menu as recommended. There are two files in this one - .3ds and .cia. Since I'm on cfw, do I only need the latter or shall I place both unto my SD Card?

.3ds is for Gateway users. Place the .cia one on the SD card in the system. You may discard the other file if you wish.

3)Try that, I only did manual injection in the past, never with rxTools.

It failed I think?

I went into Other Options -> Install FBI over Health&Safety App -> Press Y : EmuNAND

At the end I get "Error opening FBI TMD. Press A to exit."

I am doing this all from the RxTools R button menu; not sure how one should inject stuff manually as you said.

The screen also says "TMD Version: v3077" upon failure. Pretty sure my two fbi_inject files were from the v1024 folder, because that's what the program wanted to have after rejecting the v2050 ones the first time I tried to figure out which ones I need.

I guess I should load the SD card with the v3077 fbi_inject files and try again?

This is pretty confusing indeed...

After checking the SD Card just now, it turned out the fbi_inject files were actually completely absent (not sure if doing something removed them or I just forgot to put them there before).

I manually injected it directly to the Emunand in one of my systems just for the lulz since I didn't really need it.

But I did this by extracting the emunand, decrypting it, delete the H&S .app and injecting fbi in there. Then recrypting it and injecting my modified EmuNand back to my SD, worked perfectly.

But the tutorial is in Spanish so you would have trouble following it.

So the injection thing was apparently successful this time, as there was no error, and there WAS indeed some message about injection files of some sort being deleted as a result.

However... Where IS BBM? It's certainly not in the emunand's home menu, nor does RxTools show any hint of its existence... Where do I look for it and how do I use it to install .cia games?

You haven't installed it yet, boot emunand, go into the H&S app and it will open FBI, look for your BigBlueMenu and install it, then it will show up in your emunand homemenu, from here on just use BigBlueMenu to install games.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
