Hi everyone

I'm taking a break from coding the grid launcher to play some Super Mario Maker! I love this game, but there are a few things I wish you could do. Hopefully somebody from Nintendo is listening ;)

  • Have the option to start a level in a costume, and die if you get hit (i.e. don't turn back into small Mario if you're hit while wearing a costume). That way you can make proper themed levels where you stay as the character intended.
  • Costumes in other graphics eras. I want to play as DK with modern graphics too!
  • Option to mark levels as "novelty" and filter them in/out. The automatic playing levels are clever, but when I actually want to play I don't want to see them
  • Search by keyword
  • Currently, if you put a fire flower inside a block then you get the fire flower even if you are small Mario. Similarly, if you put a super mushroom in a block then you only get the super mushroom, not a fire flower, even if you are already super Mario. I would like to have the option to give the player the super mushroom if they are small Mario or the fire flower if they are already Super Mario, like what happens in many of the SMB games

Any other ideas? :)

You do know the reason the Costumes are in smb not other themes is because they get Propeller, Racoon, and cape Mario and with the modern graphics they would have to make over 100 models that work properly then they would have to make over 100 new animations for each model.

Where to start? Honestly, Super Mario Maker has such a limited tool set compared to what I'm used to and even NSMBDS hacking has a lot of constraints.

Ohhh as great as it already is, where to start with what things they could add...

We can't even recreate Mario 1 1-1 simply because we can't stack powerups - should be able to stick a fire flower powerup that, if coming out of a block, is instead a super mushroom if you're mini mario...
Mario 1 2-1 had both underground and sky sub level - can't do that... WHERE'S THE SKY LEVEL?

I recently recreated Mario 2 1-1 (of a sort), and a couple of issues there... vertical sizes I got round by adding doors, but like has been said would be nice to use. Also no waterfalls! Neither as a background or something to interact with (Mario 3)
Speaking of backgrounds, more overworld ones please! Mario 3 creating just isn't the same without the background (and of course bgm!) of 1-2, 1-4, 1-6 etc.... Night time overworld levels? Forest levels from Super Mario World? Ice worlds... how can a Mario game not have snow/ice levels?!
Mario 3 - Boom Boom! Those walking white munchers from world 5! Fire snakes! The sunshine! More!

...Don't get me started on Mario World.....

Wouldn't mind if some of the extras were (reasonably priced!!) dlc either, perhaps a pack that includes lots of the above but adds the ability to create your own overworlds too - I'd pay for that!

Yeah I realise that it would mean drawing lots of sprites. But the graphics assets already exist (in other games) so I don't think it would be that much work for an organisation like Nintendo :)

  • Local multiplayer
  • Vertical levels & scrolling
  • Sets creation - the ability to create your own worlds
Great suggestions! Are you listening, Nintendo? ;)

Can you be more specific? What doesn't it do that you would like it to do?

Yeah that's what I meant in the fifth bullet point of my original post :)

Hm, good point...

Great ideas. I would pay for DLC or Amiibo cards for additional content.

Can you be more specific? What doesn't it do that you would like it to do?
  • Enemies. Goomba Nanny, Fire Snake, Whomp, Swooper, Unagi, Skeeter, Pokey, Fire Bro, Boomerang Bro, Ice Bro, Flame Chomp, Scuttlebug, Broozer/Chargin' Chuck, Crowber, Spike, Porcupuffer/Big Bertha, Cheep Chomp, Splunkin, Micro-Goomba, Buster Beetle, Nipper Plant, River Piranha Plant/Ptooie, Lava/Volcano Lotus, Spiny Cheep Cheep, Angry Sun, Reznor, Tweester, Boom Boom/Koopalings, Banzai Bill, Blargg, Bony Beetle, Dino Rhino, Eerie, Fishin' Lakitu, Fuzzy, Hothead, Mechakoopa, Ninji, Rex, Rip Van Fish, Sumo Bro, Thwimp, Dragoneel, Fliprus Goombrats, Rotating Cannon, Ice Piranha Plant, Mecha Cheep, Waddlewing, Amp, Magmaargh, Scaredy Rat, Bramball, Bulber, Clampy, Cooligan, Foo, Ghost Block/Vase, Stalking Piranha Plant, Huckit, etc.
  • Stage Hazards. Poison Water, Lava, Skewer, Debris, Roto-disc/Ball 'n' Chain, Bowser Statue, Column, Chainsaw, Poison Gas, Spikes, Quicksand, Wind, etc.
  • Platforms. Scale, See-Saw, Rolling, Sinking, Bouncy, Spinner, Switch, Soft, Rotating, Spiked, Fence, Timed, etc.
  • Terrain. Desert, Forest, Snow, Tower, Sky, Desert Cave, Ice Cave, Mountain, Fire/Volcano, Fire Cave. Day/Night option.
  • Items. Frog Suit, Hammer Suit, Tanooki Suit, Penguin Suit, Ice Flower, Blue Koopa Shell, P-Balloon, Super Acorn, Mega Mushroom, Mini Mushroom, Gold Flower.
  • Game Mechanics. Slopes, Level Length, Sub-Areas, Checkpoints, Item Chain, Vertical Levels, Wrap-around levels.
Other. Graphics editing, Music editing, World Map Creation, Multiplayer, Game styles for Super Mario All-Stars version of SMB1/SMB3, NSMBDS/Wii/2.
I would never expect all of this but a lot of it would be quite easy to produce, since most of the things I have listed here have appeared in more than one of the games that Super Mario Maker includes. As for NSMBU assets, it's really a matter of simply porting it over.

Checkpoints, vertical levels, the ability to have a fire flower come out of a ? box if you're Big Mario, other SNES styles (Such as from SMAS or even Mario Land 1/2/3 or Yoshi's Island would be really dope), Athletic level themes/music, and the ability to chose the song for a given map. All of those would be really awesome.

I have a great idea, what about the possibility of playing the original games based on the words you create, like every single one, maybe with the addition of SMB2, i mean, i know this game is mostly focused on creating levels and all of that, but wouldn't be nice to play all of the old games in that engine, it would be quite fantastic i must say.

Other than lazyness or greed, I can't see why nintendo didn't include most of the suggestions.

Wishlist:
- invisible objects (being able to make objects invisible, not just the question mark block)
- pass through objects (good for secrets)
- slopes (wiiiiiiiiiiiiii)
- checkpoints (how was this not included in the game)

Local Multiplayer
Music Maker
Sprite maker
Ghosts for good speed runs (is that a thing already?)
More level themes.
New powers and suits like Tanuki suit, Hammer Bro suit, Ice mario, bee mario, etc etc.
Mario kart karts, cause, why not.
Other playable characters with actual abilities.
Ability to make a stage where Bowser fights Mario in a castle.
An overwolrd maker with ability to add secret levels and block unlocking switches.
Switches.
Can you ride Yoshi? I'd assume you can but really Yoshi should be in there asap.
Dress up enemies as other characters using amiibos.
Secret areas and things, advanced stuff etc.
Conveyor Belts.
Mid stage theme switches.
Power combining.
Super Mario World style backdrop hills/platforms.
Backdrop decorations.
Climbable fences ala super mario world (I forget are those in there already?)

Overall four player local multiplayer or a sort of board game style build n play style that has players make small pieces of a stage and have them combined based on what each player can make with what pieces they collect or happen to have.

I'm surprised they didn't do all that kind of stuff.
I guess all the years playing with Mario hacking tools has made Mario Maker seem a bit minimal in comparison.
They still added a lot of features but it still looks a bit limited in scope to me.
Limited compared to anything else sold for sixty dollars anyway.

If anything I was more surprised by the sixty dollar price tag.
Thirty would have made a bit more sense.
I guess the idea book was expensive to make heh.
Still I hope they add more features and if sold as DLC don't change an arm and a leg.

Overall there is a lot of things they could do but it seems like the game was meant to be a budget title at first but eh, they can always add more.
I'm waiting for the game to drop to 30 or so before I pick it up.

Wow, loads of great ideas here :)

I forgot about checkpoints. Yeah, these really are needed. WRT all the things which are available in other editors, or are features in the newer SMB games but aren't present in SMM, I wonder whether part of the reason for this omission was to make sure any level would work in any version of Mario. For example, the earlier SMB games didn't have slopes, so a level made in SMM with slopes would only with in the NSMB graphical style. Part of the idea of SMM is that you can change the look and feel of any level by playing it in different eras of Mario.

Vertical levels would be ace. I have some ideas for levels but can't create them because there's not enough height. More sub-levels would be appreciated too, as well as the ability to travel between sub-levels using doors (can't remember if you can actually do that in SMB though, or if you can only do it with pipes).

I would also love to see more graphical styles and local multiplayer.

Lots of other great suggestions here also! But I suppose if they put in everything from every SMB game ever made then nobody would ever buy another SMB game...

Oh one more feature request: Super Mario Maker Player for 3DS! This would let you play levels uploaded from SMM on the WiiU on your 3DS.

Having played more SMM over the past couple of months, I have one big gripe: the lack of worlds. When playing the course world, 1ups are meaningless and my motivation to persevere with difficult levels is pretty low since they can just be skipped and another one played when it gets frustrating. This is completely different to playing an actual SMB game, where I will happily replay the same level over and over and over until I beat it. I would absolutely love it if SMM had the option for users to collect their levels into worlds in which the levels can only belayed consecutively and not skipped.
