I have done some hunting but only turned up a very definitive answer of "no" to the question of if I can use the gamepad as a controller to play gamecube games. What I am curious about is why not? I see that the pro controller can be used, so what is stopping the community from mapping the gamecube controller to the gamepad? Thanks for putting up with my ignorance!

as I understand, the Pro Controller uses Bluetooth (which the Wii Mode already uses for things like the Wiimote). How the Gamepad works is completely different. I'm not really an expert there though.

How on Earth did they get the AV to stream to the game pad over Bluetooth?! I assumed it was a proprietary wireless technology to achieve that! Actually I wish they had just used wifi. That way I could play WiiU games in the house (the console is in my office at the end of the garden).

The gamepad just mirrors whats on the tv while in vWii mode.

A support for PS3 controller wirelessly for the WiiU or vWii could be interesting too. I personally find it the best controller.

I'm fairly certain that even in vWii it's using a 5GHz Wifi channel

Well yes, of course it's using the same technology to communicate regardless of which mode the Wii is in. My comment about how they managed to get the AV to stream was not regarding whether or not the Gamepad was being used in vWii, but was in response to somebody saying that it uses Bluetooth.
