needing a save dongle will probably result in people selling "OOT3DHax"ed carts on eBay for chunks of cash knowing some people do not want to deal with a save dongle or screw up somehow using one.

even if there are multiple versions for different firmwares and for new/old 3ds, people would sell multiple varients instead.

A save dongle isn't too bad price wise though.... I personally won't use one as I downgraded my 3ds to 4.2, but for people who bought OoT 3D to play and not for homebrew and end up using it for homebrew that's ~$15-20 for homebrew on your 3ds..... not really all that bad

this is true. however, I would spend my time hunting for a copy of cubic ninja for under $20 rather than using my copy of OOT3DS as I would not want to mess around with switching saves around each time I wanted to play it, whereas with cubic ninja, I won't lose any sleep not knowing even how to play the actual game.

Why hopefully? Hopefully, it could be adapted for use with eshop game saves. The biggest deal would really be something to decrypt and back up Mii plaza game progress so we can edit it. Even with home pass, it's taking me forever to get a fully powered up UFO rod in Ultimate Angler! Being able to hack the save to add funds for making/improving rods would be awesome...

Well it seems like smea has made some pretty good progress on his SDF alternative. He was able to provide a picture (which he probably wouldn't have if he didn't know if it would work or not.). And he was able to give that other guy some more, well, "information".
