So I've ordered both the Powersaves and the Sky3DS. I'll pick up a few 16gb class 10 cards too. I'm just wondering even with private headers, what's the risk of my Nintendo account being banned? I have a few eShop purchases and the Ambassador thing that I wouldn't want to lose or be prevented from playing online with. Might it be worth buying another 3DS (new 3DS would be nice, but then which 3DS should get the Sky3DS?), or is it worth the risk to just use it on my current XL.
If I were you I would use it on your current 3ds, because if you got a new one, you could just get a 9.2 one and not need Sky.

So long as you use the programs no ban no sky / sky army knife properly to patch the template file with your header / manufacturer id / chip ip there should be little to no risk of a ban (No one has confirmed being banned with the use of a private header)

If you were to ever get banned, currently Nintendo dishes out a temp bans that on average range from 2 week - 1 month, seems they unban everyone at once.

If you wanted to get a N3ds, and you took the time to find one on 9.2 or lower (Either by serial code shop hunting or ebay), you wouldn't even need the powersaves :|. You could just use gateways menu to extract any of your cartridges, then rip the header from that. If you were to get a N3ds on 9.2, you could still use Sky3ds to either play games off of it or you could use it to launch Cubic Ninja allowing you to run Ninjhax to launch ReiNand CFW

Is it worth the risk? Currently yes, since bans aren't permanent. If you really want a N3ds though just hunt for a 9.2 :)

Mmm, well the powersaves and sky3ds are coming in the mail anyway. Would I need to buy a Gateway card to do the Gateway menu, or now that I have a powersaves is there any reason to get a 9.2 console for the Gateways menu? Like if I didn't care about risking my eShop and ambassador stuff and wanted another 3DS and flashcart for my partner so we can play games together.

Your better off buying a used o3ds on 9.2 or under and using custom firmware. They are cheaper then sky3ds too.

You then can use your current 3ds as your legit console and the other one for your hacked console.

You don't need a gateway card to enter the menu or use any of it's features, you just need to be on 9.2 or lower.
If you're going to get a N3ds, you should try to get a 9.2. With the Sky3ds, you can boot into Gateway menu to backup your retail carts & create an emunand / backup your sysnand.
A 9.2 or lower console has access to many more features than just Sky3ds. You'll be able to use Emunand - Install games and play via .cia & a fair number of other things that are super useful imo.

If you're going to get another 3ds. Be it old or new, you're just doing yourself a favor getting one below 9.2 :)

If you have money to burn I am looking to sell a Majora's mask new 3ds xl, set up for Gateway, and the Gateway blue and red cards, all in boxes. I want a sky3ds and would take it as a partial swap if you lived nearby (I'm in Canberra).

I don't really have money to burn, but I love Nintendo stuff and the gubment gives us students 1,000 this time of year. I can't afford to buy all the games I want, but I can afford to justify spending money on this kind of stuff considering the amount of joy it'll bring. I live in Adelaide though.

Ok if you want it let me know, a swap might be a bit hard. The good thing is, if you decide to get a 9.2 new 3ds and go the gateway route down the road, you can use the Sky3DS as a cubic ninja to set it up.

@Costello got confirmation that the DSTwo+ is real, just like the Crown3DS. But we all know how that thing ended up. In light of recent events in the CFW scene, there is a chance that the DSTwo+ could end up being a Crown3DS 2.

Why do you want a Sky3DS if you have Gateway setup already in any case?

If you have a Gateway, you need to use OOT or CN at least once to boot into gateway menu. So if you don't have either of those, but for some reason have a Sky3ds (Could be that the sky was cheaper than either exploit games) then you can use that instead to emulate the game you choose in order to boot into the menu. Once you're in the menu, you no longer need them though, since you can then install the Mset exploit if you're on a N3ds.

I want to try changing regions, for which you need multiple copies of Cubic Ninja (I only have a Euro one). I thought it would be cheaper to get a Sky (and be able to sell my Euro one) than buy a Japanese and US copy.

How much would you want to sell that 3DS for? I'm kind of thinking now that two 3DSs with two flashcarts might be good. Even if an update tomorrow blocks it from online, at least I'll still be able to play local multiplayer between them with my partner still right.

I'll send you a pm

If I buy a new new 3ds xl on 9.0 could I use the Sky3DS to mod it with Cube Ninja and then run games from the internal SD?

As sky3ds basically runs a 1:1 cartridge, yes you would be able to use a rom of cubic ninja to enable homebrew and gain access. However, good luck finding a new 3ds xl below 9.2.

Yeah that's what I thought. What firmware would this one have? I don't think I want to put a lot of time into hunting down a <9.2 3DS, life is too short.

It's really a tossup. I know in the US there were two prints of the MM new 3ds. One came with 9.2 and the others 9.4. I'd wager this is a reprint as well in the UK, so probably 9.4. I could be wrong though. Could always buy it and see, if it doesn't return it.

Old 3ds XL below 9.2 are much much easier to find. If you really don't have a need to play xenoblade or stable 3d, i'd just hunt one of those down.

Ah, I get you know. It's a nice feature, but debatable whether its worth the upgrade. To each their own I guess. You could try buying it from there and seeing what you get. If you have the time and want to drive around locally, here is a list of known serial number firmware versions https://gbatemp.net/threads/n3ds-xl-firmware-by-version-number.381479/
