Is there a buy and sell forum here somewhere? (I have had a look but there doesn't seem to be). I want to advertise for sale but idk if it's against any rules etc.

You only gain access to the buy and sell boards after a certain number of posts. I believe that number to be 100.

You're less than 20 posts away. I'd say just make some constructive posts over the next couple of days and you'll be able to post there in no time.

It is 100 posts to access the trading section. At 82, you're nearly there. If you contribute a little more than one post a day, less than two weeks. Find a way to contribute multiple times a day, you could knock it down to a week. Contribute five times a day and suddenly it's as little as three if you post a little extra. With E3 here, just post about how you're feeling about certain releases. What you liked and didn't like in the respective topics for each conference as they air. Anything like that will easily get you the posts you need.

Honestly, I think the post limit for using the WTS/WTB sections is a joke, it only promotes useless posts.
Then again to prove my point, go post some 20 useless posts on EOF.

EoF doesn't count towards post count. And the 100 posts is a precaution. If someone is just looking to scam, the odds that they'll make 100 posts that actually count towards their post count is fairly low. If someone sticks around long enough to post at least semi-on topic posts 100 times, the odds are far less that they're just looking to scam somebody for a quick buck.

I understand the reasoning, only I am of the opinion it is not only cumbersome, but also doesn't work as intended.

What proof do you have? Two or three scammers total in the past few years? I don't think a couple of exceptions to the rule prove the rule doesn't work, rather, it does the opposite.

I have no proof TBH, it is only an opinion. I haven't made a serious study and I don't have any stats at all. I can say that I certainly posted some unnecessary replies and stuff trying not to be so bothersome in order to reach the 100 posts a long time ago and then used the WTS/WTB section (of course, I didn't scam anyone).
Also I can name ChrisX930 as an example that the 100 posts thing doesn't work, but it is only an individual case and it doesn't prove anything, so I haven't real proof in favor or against it, only my opinion.

I'd also say it works quite well. That limit isn't there for people to game to gain access to the buy/sell/trade forums, but for registered, contributing users to occassionally get rid of their stuff in an as scam free as possible environment. If you're posting to gain access you're doing it wrong.

But I have been registered since 2007, I only posted when I had something useful to say, and last year when I needed to access WTB/WTS (as I was looking for a used GW card) I still had something around 40 posts.
So, what do you do if you don't really have anything useful to say but you need to access the forums?
You start commenting about how nice a given picture is, or how bad gw support is, or... just useless 4chan like stuff, and just accumulate posts, so the quality of your posts diminishes only in order to access a feature.
You have a goal now, and it is posting more even if it is not useful stuff, so you post more at lower quality.

EDIT: And look at people that registered last month that have over 1000 posts, how useful are those posts? can they really be considered as contribution? Is aimless posting a contribution? Is the system broken? Yes?

I now have 100+ messages, although I see no buy and sell forum. Please tell me I am just doing something stupid

The section is listed under the GBAtemp Network Discussions heading on the main forum page (right above where the console sections begin), and is labeled as The Trading Area. If you're not seeing it for some reason, try clearing your cache and cookies for the site, then look again.
