So my Dad's TV has a hard drive in it which is used to record shows and run some software that the TV needs to work. Lately the hard drive has started clicking and sometimes the TV won't turn on. If before the HDD stops working completely; I make an image of the hard drive using Win32 disk imager then write that to a working HDD should the TV work?

however, you would may want to check on the tv manufacter\manual how to replace the hdd (or follow instructions to upgrade to a bigger one)
there should be information about that and the proper way to do it..

Its an LG TV. The model number is "42LC2DR-AC". I've contacted LG and haven't received a response yet. When I get the time I can look around the house for the manuals, but given that the TV is 8 years old now they're probably lost.

well the manual doesn't got any information to replace or upgrade the hdd

amywho. i don't believe they put any software in the hdd, and very high changes you can just swap it for another and the tv will work with it.

plug the hdd to the pc, probably it is fat32 formatted, or maybe a linux partition (however some STB's got the thing encrypted and it could be the case on your tv)
if its not a encrypted partition then you can just fetch the stuff inside

i really don't recommend using win32 disk imager.. if the hard disk is damaged, you will have a hard time to make a copy of it (or will not be possible because it will be stuck trying to read)
if you manage to make the copy however, the "damaged" part will also be repliqued on the new hard drive, and the tv still "bitch" about it...

unless you are trying to save the recordings\stuff inside the hard drive, i recommend you to just put the new hard drive on the tv and see if it works that way

Well thanks for taking your time to help me out here. The recordings aren't all that important, but whether or not the TV turns on is. I'll try replacing the hard drive and see how it goes.

meanwhile you can also try to boot it without the HDD, it should display an error saying no hdd found.. high change it lets you use the tv without the recording part..
