Hey there guys, I bought a N3DS about 5 months ago and it has the lowest firmware however I got Gateway along with it because by the time they'd announced N3DS support and a video proving it so I went for it.

Now, the thing is, i'm not buying willing to buy Cubic Ninja or OoT and personally I think the chances for them to find another kernel exploit are very small so i'm at the point where I don't want to wait anymore and i'm considering to sell my GW and update my N3DS.

So, I'd like to know if there's any way to get my GW working w/o Cubic Ninja or OoT or if there's any word from them saying that they're advancing other than they're working on it.

Cubic Ninja and Zelda OOT exploits work under 9.2. If you update to fw 9.7 (currently the latest fw), then you'll no longer have kernel access. Sky3DS works, for now, but there's no telling if it will in the near future. Keeping your 3DS on an exploitable firmware would be the wise thing to do. A lot of people regretted it (and for a very long time too) when they updated from 4.5.

Why won't you buy OoT or CN? You already spent ~$60 or more on a GW, a copy of CN won't set you back that much, and it will also enable you to do other things, like run NTR-CFW and NINJHAX.
If you update you will have to buy a Sky3DS (which costs far more than a copy of CN) or buy the games which will cost you a lot more. You only have to download 3 games and you'll already have saved money if you go for GW+CN.

I didn't look it that way, now it seems like a really bad idea to update. Thanks!

And what do you plan on doing once you update to 9.7?
If you really must update to 9.7, I'd say at least get an 8.1 NAND dump.

Basically I just wanted access to the eShop but DSpider made me realize updating is a dumb idea.

The thing is I have a yearly budget to spend on video games and I spent it on the 3DS and all that and i'm also moving to a different country in a couple of months so I really can't afford to spend any more money on video games until things settle.

In that case you won't be able to afford anything for a while anyway so you might as well stay on 8.1 for the time being. :)
Maybe you can borrow OoT or CN from someone?
To install the OoT exploit you will need access to a o3DS on 9.2 or below or a save dongle, but CN doesn't need that.

Actually, for a while, Japanese CN was about $80-100, making Sky cheaper (depending on where you bought either one). But it's down to about 68 bucks on Amazon now; at that price I'd still consider spending the extra 10 bucks or so on a Sky purely for its utility (could have multiple regions of CN/OoT as required, if one has two or more different region 3DSes).

Isn't it 50 bucks on ebay?

The problem is that I have a Japanese 3DS so im pretty much screwed. Now, ALT222 mentioned that he used Sky3DS to install CN, so i'm thinking about selling my GW, getting a Sky3DS and doing the same thing, however is it possible to get emunand w/o GW?

You can use NTR-CFW which lets you do some nice things. Region free, eShop firmware spoofing to access eShop with any firmware version, plugins (like cheat plugins, save backup / restore and more) and maybe more things I have missed.

Sky3DS costs a lot more than GW though. It might be cheaper in the end to import a used copy of OoT or CN. OoT is probably cheaper.
