Hacking Exploitability of Japanese New 3DS's?

So, my New 3DS is completely screwed up and I need a new one. Since small New 3DS's don't exist in North America, I need to import anyway, and Japan would be the cheapest place.

There seems to be very little information on the exploitability of Japanese systems. Are any of them above 9.2, and if so, is there a list of which serial numbers I need to avoid? I've searched GBATemp and haven't found any mentions of non-exploitable systems.

Thanks!

I found that list, but it doesn't include any information on black non-XL systems, which is what I want.

I have a tenso account which lets me order from Amazon.co.jp. I just finished sending google-translated messages (with apologies for my terrible Japanese) to a number of individual sellers, asking them for the first five characters of the serial number. It's possible I won't hear back, but in theory, I only need one.

But the other thing is, as far as I can tell, NO ONE has reported buying a Japanese system with a firmware > 9.2. In theory, that could be because they don't exist—there still aren't any non-exploitable Old 3DS's, for instance. But it could also be because not enough people have JP systems. I can't tell.

I'm not sure if they can. I looked an over my JP box (which is now lost) when I got it and saw nothing.

Oh. Well if the serial number isn't written on the outside of Japanese boxes, that kind of screws up my plans.

Edit: reading through the thread, it seems that the boxes don't have seals, so that's how they can check.

Retailers must keep records of serial numbers. Otherwise, it would be much too easy to commit return fraud.

Are you sure Japan is the cheapest? After shipping to the US (directly by Amazon, no other service needed) my brand new n3DS (black) from Amazon France cost just $170. It was like 140 Euros (the price decreased when i went to checkout). The white one was 130 Euros for some reason... 15e for shipping that took 2 weeks, and they had 25e for 3-day shipping. I bought it about a month ago and the exchange rate is even better for the US than back then so it'd be a couple bucks cheaper than that now. Plus it's got english.
It came with firmware 9.0.0 btw.

Amazon.fr is where I bought my first one. I think Japan will end up being less though. $140 (after currency conversion) from Amazon.co.jp, and then Tenso charges about $15 for one-week shipping.

Honestly though, my main concern is getting an exploitable firmware. I'm not sure how to go about this.

Hey OP, what happened to your N3DS, exactly? I'm just curious because I have a theory that Nintendo has skimped-out on quality this time around and were about to see a lot of people having dramas in the near future. My N3DS had a dead pixel straight out of the box

IIRC flashing shenanigans broke NFC on anything > 9.2, and anything that loaded the module (lots of things) crashed the system. Basically a semi-brick.
(...unless more info was found since I last read that thread.)

I believe this is what you are looking for. YJM1032. Right from my own system. Firmware was 9.1J

Well, that's something at least—thank you!

Yeah, I somehow screwed up the nfc, although I can't imagine how. It's nothing Nintendo did—the build quality of my system is absolutely fantastic, and the fact that I'm currently trying to buy a new one is a testament to how much I like the hardware.

My friend bought a N3DS JP for me mid-March from a store in Japan and it came with 8.1J. Also other N3DSLL JP he bought for other friends also at 9.1J. I would say that if you avoid the MM LL LE (which is 9.4J I believe) then you are pretty safe.

And N3DS JP does not have serial print on the box so you can't even check if you want to look for a specific one.

Mine had a stuck pixel straight out of the box (n3dsxl). Exchanged it the next day :)
The new one's fine, although I find the shoulder buttons a bit mushy. I wish they had a nice click like the rest of the buttons. I don't think the o3dsxl or the n3ds/xl have the same build quality as the o3ds.
