Ok, so I was trying to see what my local stores had, and shocker... Only the generics everyone has. Well, a Target an hourish up the road has Shiek and Toon Link... Perhaps others. (Lady on the phone was a bit confused) Think its worth a trip? I am looking at more or less collector's value, or reselling extras. Does this seem worthwhile, or a wasted trip?

Is this thread seriously existing? I'm sorry if I come off as rude.

To answer your question: I don't know. Toon Link and Sheik don't really strike me as rare amiibo. If you want to flip them for money or collect them, try your luck, but if they really had any value then do you think Target would still have them? It's as easy as answering that question. The generic ones are everywhere because Nintendo made more of them. The rare amiibo only ever become rare when the scalpers go crazy about hoarding amiibo to resell and find out a particular one isn't stocked anymore.

If you really wanted to collect amiibo you'd just preorder them because it's not like amiibo will be sold at reduced prices later. That saves you money, time and stress. Or, you could just enjoy them as they're meant to be.

Depends on whether you want to drive an hour to get it, or check out ebay and see the prices on there. If you want to use it, those are your options. It's worth it if it's worth it to you. Who knows if nintendo will ever release toon link again, and in all likely hood, if they do, it'll be a different figurine (like the smash mario vs party 10 mario). So if you want this one, and the drive is worth it to you, go for it =]

You obviously haven't been paying attention if you think that's going to make it easy. Pre-orders are selling out within minutes, if they're offered. When they hit the store without pre-orders, they're selling out within minutes of the stores opening. Only reason why toon link and shiek are still kind of available is because they weren't really suppose to be released until the 13th, and some stores got a bit confused so now all of them are kind of releasing them when they get them.

As far as rarity goes, we have no idea how much they're making of each. The ones that are easy to get now are probably going to be the ones that stay common (the likes of mario, pikachu, etc will always be common, but that's still just a guess), all the new waves are going to be bought up within minutes of becoming available, be it pre-order or in-store. Only mess ups are letting normal people get a chance.

Please also note, OP and me are both in the states. The situation is frikin' insane here.

Rare or expensive amiibos?

  • Villager
  • Rosalina
  • Wii Fit Trainer
  • Ness
  • Shulk
  • Lucina
  • Robin
  • Pac-Man
  • Meta Knight
  • King Dedede
  • Little Mac
  • Captain Falcon
You're not going to find these for the standard price unless you're lucky or you've got someone willing to pick them up for you.

And no, I didn't forget Mega Man, Toon Link, Lucario or who else because they're going for the normal price.

My advice? Quit while you're ahead. These amiibos, while nice, are just not worth the time, stress, and gas money. Nintendo failed big time (again) with simple supply and demand. To be fair, even they didn't know that these things would take off as they have. I'm trying to get a Rosalina for my daughter, which of course are exclusive to Target and sold out in minutes. The only way to get them is to pay the price-gouging pieces of sh*t ebay resellers, but I refuse to do that.

I saw Toon Link's amiibo in person and I have to say it looks really good but I wish that was Teen Link instead because the original Smash Link is just such a disgrace of a figure. Peach's fine but Lucario's a bit too thin of a character design.

It'd be cool if Lucario's amiibo were to became compatible with "Pokken 3DS/Wii U" (this needs to happen!). :P

I bought a Rosalina for £14.50 (the standard price for local retailers) which in dollars is $22 and considering it's going for triple the amount I really couldn't say no.

That's my only mistake here as I honestly don't and can't know the situation there. I have been paying attention and painstakingly so because I want to know just what people see in amiibo considering there's only one commercially available game globally that takes advantage of amiibo in any meaningful manner. Where I live? I can preorder any amiibo I want without any problem. I walked in to a store and bought Villager long after release without issues. There are other countries beside the US and we don't have your problems, so I'm sorry you guys have it tough, but don't tell me I'm not paying attention. ;)

Don't suppose you have any extra villagers you'd be willing to part with or preorder for me :3

I don't collect, I play with amiibo. Villager is the only amiibo I have, but I don't have the packaging anymore. 2015 is about slimming down my Nintendo possessions, though. I'm willing to part with Villager. Hit me up via PM with your address or ZIP code so I can make out the shipping costs. That's the biggest obstacle. It's not cheap for me to ship stuff to the US. Also, I need to fill out forms making sure I'm not making you import goods that can harm homeland security. So if you still want Villager, I can make it happen. But again, it's not cheap.

EDIT: I'm really not joking about that homeland security part. Your customs is brutal.

Lol, wow. Didn't expect the responses like this. Wife and I thought the day trip would be fun. Toon Link and Shiek seem to be going for about twice retail atm. I got two of the former and 3 of the latter. There's also a restaurant we like up here and it's kind of an anniversary. So... Yea... Not regretting the trip. :-)

I'm glad you found your calling and did what you thought is best for you. Congratulations on your anniversary, too. I just feel that what you're doing is akin to investing in the stock market and really asking for opinions on what to buy is pointless. There's a risk to reselling amiibo for a profit as you can't really know what ends up being sought after and what not. You know what you're doing and you don't need anyone's approval here. Just stating my 0,02€ worth.

The advantage of living in Colorado. The town an hour away is beautiful mountain town. If I can sell the 3 surplus and keep 2 for the price I paid, I call it a win. So yea, if my investment falls through, at worst I got scenery and time with my wife. ;-)

I might know someone who perhaps has access to selling you a Villager as he's told me a shop near him has loads of them but here's the thing, I don't know if he's ever sent anything to US and in case it got lost it'd be troublesome so a tracked service would be ideal.

Figure: £10.95
Shipping: £15?
Total: £25.95 ($39.38)

I'm seeing to it if he can provide me a Little Mac too (this guy's awesome he also got me a Rosalina!).

Local markets in germany got still almost all amiibos on stock, so you might want to ask some of those re-sellers. Shipping is expensive tho.

You folks are awesome. I appreciate the offers of villagers, but the shipping cost would probably make it not worth it. I suspect I might pick up a used one if I can, for actual use with my game, though I want to get an English box for collector reasons. I wonder if there's any interest for a list of availability across regions.

Impossible. I doubt that's ever happening not only because there are no public numbers on the distribution of amiibo across regions to begin with, but because availability can and will vary from country to country, from city to city, even from store to store. There are two GameStop stores that I frequent here, one close to my home and the other close to my workplace. I couldn't find almost any amiibo in stock at the GameStop store close to my home, so I tend to do my shopping after work at the other location because I know less people frequent it so there's a higher chance of stuff like amiibo still being in stock.

Then you also have to consider how popular amiibo is between regions. I've done market study on Nike and I know for a fact that Air Jordan is the fastest selling shoe brand in the US in the last two years, but it's the 5th fastest selling shoe brand in Europe in the same time frame. (If you wish to know, New Balance made first in Europe.) So just like Air Jordan, amiibo may be sought after more in a particular region than another. It's very possible Europeans aren't going insane about amiibo as the people in the US, so if you were to live here you'd find there's no trouble getting amiibo at all. I have never done market study on a Japanese brand or sales in Japan, so I don't know about that market as much.
