I'm wondering if I have all my facts down. If not, please correct me. Trying to figure something out for a friend.

NNIDs may be linked to only a single 3DS at any time and when you log in with your NNID on a particular 3DS, the NNID will be linked to that 3DS.
Deleting an NNID will result in removing not just the information stored on your 3DS, but your entire NNID including purchases made on your Wii U.
The only way to log out of your NNID is by formatting the 3DS, however that doesn't remove the linking between the NNID and the 3DS.
If you want to remove the link between your NNID and a particular 3DS, you must perform a System Transfer to another 3DS.
In a case where you can't perform a System Transfer, you have to call Nintendo and ask them to remove any links your NNID has to an existing 3DS.
When you have formatted your 3DS, another person can use it to log in with their NNID. However, you can't login with your NNID on any other 3DS...
...because your NNID is still linked to that same 3DS. The other person's NNID will also be linked to it, and the same principles now apply to them as well.

Is all the above correct? And as I understand it, if you call Nintendo then they may or may not help you with unlinking your NNID from an existing 3DS. I've heard mixed reports on this, sometimes reading you have to lie you've lost/broke your 3DS to have Nintendo help you. Does anyone have any input to that? It'd be much appreciated.

I was hoping Nintendo would revise the account system with the New 3DS, but sadly they haven't done that. I sold my 3DS XL today (to still get a good deal on it before the New 3DS is officially out in Europe), but even if I were to buy a New 3DS soon I can't log in with my NNID on it because my 3DS XL, which I formatted, is still linked to my NNID. Hooray Nintendo! :ohnoes:

whats the point of havving an account when you can not use it on anothe console besides that one?
the old system without the nnid wa better

if you link your wii u, and want to get rid of the 3ds because you dont play it or any reson, if you unlink or do something to get rid of the 3ds part, you can say goodbye to wii u part?

also, it would be much better if i could login on another 3ds with my account and play my games...
nintendo doesn't want you to play games on offline mode and your brother uses your account to play your games... they want you and your brother to buy the same games...

The way I understand it is that if you don't want trouble with your NNID at any point, then have two NNIDs (one for Wii U and one for 3DS). That way if you just lose interest in your 3DS you can delete the NNID on it and not worry about your Wii U losing anything. But it'd be too late for that if you already have a single NNID tied to both a Wii U and a 3DS.

If I understand it correctly, you can only delete NNIDs from the WiiU. In a 3DS you can only link/unlink/transfer NNIDs.

Wii U is more flexible with NNIDs, that's true. However, you can not link/unlink an NNID on a 3DS yourself. That's something only Nintendo can do, unless you make a System Transfer, which will also transfer the NNID to another 3DS. You can however format your 3DS, which is effectively logging you out of your NNID, but still doesn't remove the link to your NNID on the 3DS. (I know it sounds convoluted, because that's what it is.)

some parts are not true.
if you format a 3DS then the NNID is unlinked and can be used on another 3DS.
i tried that with the 2DS. worked like magic!
transferred all the info to the 2DS from the XL and created NNID on the XL. then I decided the 2DS suck so I transfer everything back to the XL, so i got into my previous user that was made on the XL.
format a 3ds and the NNID is yours to use on another system

It most definitely doesn't work that way. I had formatted my 3DS XL, sold it, and now bought a New3DS XL and I can't sign in to my NNID. I have a pending support ticket with Nintendo to have the NNID released from the old system.
