Hey folks,

Got my Gateway in the mail a couple days back. I did the following:
  1. Backed up SD card contents to my computer.
  2. Updated the Gateway card.
  3. Put emuNAND on the SD card.
  4. Unlinked sysNAND and emuNAND by "System Format"ing sysNAND. (Because I want to use emuNAND as my daily, and maintain Friend Codes, Mii Plaza data, etc.)
  5. Updated emuNAND to 9.4.
  6. Put backed up SD card contents back on the emuNAND SD, in the folder with the original ID string. (A differently named subfolder was created there, so I renamed the old folder to match that name, replacing the new one's contents. This way my old eShop games showed up and Mii Plaza works as it did before.)
I then installed some CIAs and noticed some required an update before launch. Sure, fine and dandy. Read somewhere I need the update CIAs for it, but I figured might as well try using the eShop and see for myself.

So I open up the eShop, it displays my Nickname and Nintendo Network ID (username) along with "Signing in. Please wait...". Soon after, it throws up an error message:
Error code: 022-2634
An error has occurred. Try again later.
Along with the usual pleasantries of contacting customer service if the issue persists.

I look around the web and find I may need to re-enter my NNID on sysNAND. Sure thing, I go into sysNAND and try that. When the process is nearly finished, however, it asks me to update. (sysNAND is currently on 8.1.)

What is the solution here? I'd like to still be able to access NNID services (like eShop) on my emuNAND.
I still have backups of sysNAND, both old and new, as well as one of the fresh emuNAND. I have no trouble reverting to the original state if this requires doing things over from scratch.

Any pointers would be appreciated. If you need more info, just ask.

EDIT: Here's a video of me accessing NNID on sysNAND and then emuNAND, for clarification.

Not sure what you did, but here's how you should do it:

1. Have a sysnand that's linked to the desired NNID
2. Format Emunand
3. Update Emunand to 9.4
4. Take out SD Card
5. Format Sysnand
6. Once formatted, go into settings ON SYSNAND, and log in to the SAME NNID that's on your emunand
7. Once signed in, pop in your Emunand SD Card again
8. Done

I was in 9.2 of SysNAND and entered NNID just fine. How is it not possible to re-enter your NNID in 8.1 (without updating)? That's wierd...?
Here's a rough translation of the error I get:
"Error code: 022-2511
To use online services you need to do a system update."
Maybe because I'm on an 8.x system, sysNAND-wise? No idea.

Go find ninteno network through settings menu on emunand and set it up from there

NNID is already set up on emuNAND. It tries signing in, but gives me "An error has occurred" as described in the OP. So there's nothing to set up. I can't even access the NNID-related settings...
In your thread, the tutorial for working eShop with separated emuNAND, someone said that formatting their sysNAND a second time solved their issue. Theirs seems slightly different than my problem, but I'll go and give that a shot in a couple of minutes, see how that goes.
EDIT: Okay, that didn't solve it.

Not sure what you did, but here's how you should do it:
Tomorrow, I'll restore everything to its original state (ie, restore original sysNAND and format me a new emuNAND) and try that out. Thanks!

Wait sorry i misstyped. I meant sysnand. Go in settings on sysnand and go Nintendo network and set it up there

This is the 5th step from a tutorial I have written
"5) Great now you have separated your sysnand from emunand but there is a problem. When you try to go into eshop from emunand you get an error. This happens because after format NNID info on sysnand are lost so you need to go back on sysnand and enter your existing NNID info on your 3ds. Do not create a new NNID. PUT EXISTING NNID ON SYSNAND NNID. After that you can get into eshop on emunand normally"

Here is the full tutorial.

I am aware that is what you're supposed to do, but it seems impossible for me. Whenever I try it, after entering my information, it tells me to perform a system update before I can continue...

I am having the exact same problem.
I updated emunand, then tried accessing eshop and it throws 022-2634 error.
So i look it up and realize i need to link NNID on sysnand with NNID settings (NOT ESHOP)
After trying to link my NNID settings on sysnand(7.2) right after entering credentials for existing account after connecting to internet it throws "Error code: 022-2511 To use online services you need to do a system update."

I also tried restoring my sysnand back(with NAND dump) to when NNID credentials where saved before I unlinked sysnand and emunand.
Then tried accessing emunand eshop (and NNID settings) to verify saved credentials are working but it throws same 022-2634 error...
Really don't know where to go from here..
As far as it seems I need to wait for Gateway to support latest sysnand update before I will have access to eshop.....

You should have downgraded to 4.x first before formatting sysnand. That's what I did. I would assume you have a Super Smash Bros game to update back to 8.1? You created more problems then there had to be. :P

I don't think you can have NNID working on both sysnand and emunand if you intended to unlink sysnand from emunand. Formatting either one while on a firmware that included NNID support will force you to unlink NNID. Also downgrading sysnand to format without unlinking works better, but you can't relink sysnand until you unlink emunand. Because you can't link NNID twice. It has to be properly unlinked and Nintendo's servers will refuse to let you relink twice in a row like this. You're just spinning your wheels in the mud with this. :P

Also because you formatted and unlinked NNID, you will not be able to use NNID in emunand anymore. You may have to format emunand again to properly relink it. Also your NNID connection with your sysnand backups are broken too. Even if you restore them, NNID won't work on them anymore because the NNID had been unlinked from your console.

What you can do is this:

1. Format emunand and relink it to NNID.
2. Restore a backup of your sysnand that still had NNID linked.

That's your best bet if you really want to keep emunand unlinked from sysnand and still have NNID access on both. Assuming each format of emunand/sysnand doesn't generate a new "ticket" or whatever console ID they use to indentify your console with, then the backup of your sysnand should be able to access NNID again. If not, then it's a something generated in sysnand/emunand at the time of linking NNID and will only work on that copy of sysnand/emunand.

Either way you most likely lost your FC because you didn't format sysnand in the correct way. Unlinking NNID most likely requires you to reformat emunand to link it back correctly. I don't know if it will let you relink it in system settings again and if it does, you may be forced into a new Friend Code.

Also, I don't think it's possible to link NNID to system firmware without updating it to latest version. If it asks you to update and won't let you proceed, then your only option is to relink emunand instead and restore a backup of your sysnand (assuming you still have one) from before you formatted it. This means emunand and sysnand will be linked again. Your only option now is format emumand to unlink things and your sysnand backup should still have access to NNID once you relink emunand. (again, assuming a unique ticket isn't stored on emunand when you link NNID). But of coarse this means losing your mii's, save games, installed CIA games, and Friend Code. So either way your screwed.

If you don't really intend to have NNID access in sysnand, then the best option is to just downgrade and format it, then upgrade back via game cartridge. (Do NOT update sysnand using a rom. You WILL brick your console!)

Though your attempts to relink sysnand suggests for whatever reason you still want NNID on sysnand. NNID on a outdated sysnand isn't very useful since you won't have eShop access on it. Pokebank being one of the few exceptions. Though you would end up having that on your emunand and would still work in Classic Mode if you intend to use it for retail carts. I don't think you can buy themes on outdated firmware though you can still view the themes.

It's been awhile since I bought a home menu theme though so I don't know for sure. I can visit the theme shop without updating though, but if you get sent into eShop when paying for a theme, then you will be stopped short by an update prompt.

Im not sure if your fully grasping what i want here.
All I need is eshop access in emunand i don't care about sysnand..
My Base firmware was 7.2, after formatting emunand my eshop in emunand never worked got 022-2634...
So I heard to get emunand eshop to work you need sysnand linked to your NNID(so i checked to see if my credentials were inputted in NNID settings and they were, yet i tried signing in with them then it popped up next error 022-2511 saying it needs update.
Im just really confused why this isn't working..
What am I supposed to do to fix this?

EDIT:So it's fixed but still somewhat confused...
I made emunand format after i formatted system memory in sysnand(so NNID settings were cleared)
this created a emunand of 7.2 with no NNID settings. I then updated emunand to 9.5 and tried inputting my NNID credentials and all is well! Now all left to do is downgrade sysnand to 4.2.

Thanks for input it did clear some things up a bit.

Can confirm, formatting emunand from system settings and afterwards logging in to nintendo id seems to work, was at least able to redownload the themes i purchased.

well that's weird

I had a 3DS on 9.2, got a gateway, formatted emunand, updated it to the latest firmware and reformatted sysnand

then my NNID on emunand didn't work so I just linked it on sysnand and then it worked on emunand

is there any way you can upgrade your sysnand to 9.X but below 9.3?

Now this is weird. Formatting EmuNAND (from within System Settings!) seems to have somehow relinked SysNAND and EmuNand, wtf.

Same here. I formatted EmuNAND and tried relinking my NNID (because if i tried linking on SysNAND it would ask me to update) and it worked.

Okay now after reformatting EmuNAND i also reformatted SysNAND, and now those two are completely unlinked while I still seem to have access to eshop in EmuNAND.

Im sorry to necro this, but i find its relevant.

I formatted SysNAND, formatted EmuNAND, set everything up on EmuNAND, updated, made a new NNID. Seemed like my nands were linked (even tho logged out on NNID on Sysnand). I think this, because i had the gift bug. I formatted SysNAND again, but i cannot login on sysNAND.

(However, my nands do seem unlinked now, and i can access the Estore)

You don't really need to login on sysnand.
Are you getting 022-2634 if you try using your NNID or something? You say you can access the eShop so I'm not sure what the question is.
