The sad thing is that I'm still contemplating simply buying a 4.5 3DS, but buying one online as opposed to buying one at Gamestop would be cheaper, though it would take longer to get and if Gateway released in that time then I would just lose it.

Go ahead and do it. They'll only release when most people have given up hope, so by buying that 4.5 3DS, I'll get the release sooner.
