So I've been following this thread for a while, and just got a new 3DS XL for Christmas.

To make sure I understand, Sky3DS is available and good to go now, right, while everyone here is waiting for Gateway to update with the latest firmware support, is that right?

How come? What makes Gateway so much better than Sky3DS?

How come? What makes Gateway so much better than Sky3DS?
SKY3DS offers:
  1. Region-specific only. (A US/EU/JAP device will only run games from that region.)
  2. Limited functionality, it relies on a hardware method to switch roms rather than a menu - forcing you to cycle through which becomes inconvenient with a higher number of games loaded.
  3. Supports official games only. As I understand it altered games, e-shop games and anything else like homebrew does not run. Trimmed roms should also not run as they are altered.
  4. No alternate functionality like emuNAND, cheats, real-time-saves or anything of the sort that relies on a menu.
  5. SKY3DS has not yet been blocked and runs natively to all firmware to-date (no guarantee that it won't be blocked eventually).
Meanwhile Gateway offers (will offer?):
  1. Region-free. (Games from every region will run.)
  2. Loads through a menu, you can select the games you want to play and easily access no matter how many are on your card.
  3. Supports e-shop titles, homebrew and more.
  4. Potential expansion into additional features like emuNAND, cheats real-time-saves and so on through a menu.
  5. Won't run natively on all firmware but will likely benefit from emuNAND instead.
On top of that Gateway is a known element with a traceable history and SKY3DS is a fresh and unknown contender.
There is no guarantee or reputation that SKY will remain active as there is for Gateway - a reputation that many value highly.

we know nothing about that. or perhaps you're a sky3ds dev :)

"nothing" isn't exactly true. any person with the necessary skills would be able to analyze it and make a relatively right judgment about the possible outcomes that can happen. and sky3ds not being able to be unblocked after being blocked is a highly likely scenario.
I'm not saying it's easy to block it. I'm only saying that if it gets blocked, they probably will stay like that (unless they release a new card).

And as such, we have nothing to do now but to wait and pray that the great gateway team will bestow upon us the long awaited update that will save us all.

well... I don't know about you but I like sleeping and doing other activities ;)

All those emails mean nothing, everyone can type that :). Just wait and see what happens, in the mean time enjoy your holiday (if you have it)

Gateway is already blocked, it's the simple fact of FW updates, Sky3DS doesn't have a strict FW requirement like Gateway and just sells it as an all-encompassing card, nobody is told not to update and no measures are taken to ensure they don't need to update, so when it's blocked and a good chunk of their users update before they're even aware, they're screwed.

They always seem to keep pushing the update further and further slightly ever so.
Even if its just slightly, its better then just saying its a long way off. It means development is far enough that it can be considered close enough to release. They may just keep finding a bug that needs to be fixed before release thus causing a delay.
