Hacking Planning on getting a gateway, is it worth it?

Like the name of the thread says, I'm planning on getting a flash card. And I've heard a ton about gateway, and how it has region-free, homebrew support, ability to download eshop games for free (or something like that), and the like.

Then I see videos showing off DevMenu, or whatever it's called. And the ability to backup your sysNAND (if I understood it correctly?) and restore it, kinda like what BootMii does back on the Wii. My system is currently running on 9.2, and I've left my 3DS off just so it can't update.

With all the things I can do, and while it does tempting. It also looks like there's the risk of bricking.

So, what exactly can I do with the gateway card, before I make take the leap of faith to actually get/use one.

The bricking code was only used for a little while in an older version of the GW firmware, but I believe they stopped using it since it bricked a bunch of people and they had to fix/replace so many people's devices. It's probably better to get one now rather than wait later, as demand will most likely be even higher after support for the higher firmwares is released.

Youre on 9.2 so gateway will be compatible with that. Everything you said is possible ( but you cant go into the exhop and download everything for free, it can play eshop dumps). In case of the gw, they have a brik code inserted for clone users. Wnile there is no known case of an legimate gateway user who bricked his 3ds ( with the newest launcher.dat) there is always a small change you can brick it( as the code is still there)! But i wouldnt count on it. If you install the wrong cias to sysnand ou can also brick your 3ds, but you have to be really ignorant if you do that

If yiu just want to plug and play( and you dont care about other functions) you can also go for an sky3ds, although that card can getpermanently blocked by a fw update from nintendo. ( gateway has probabaly emunand on 9.2 so it is more usefull after a nintendo update .

All you said except that it doesn't actually restore your NAND. It backups up your NAND but you need to hardmod your 3DS in order to restore the NAND you backed up.
And there's no risk of bricking. That was a long story a long time ago. As long you you do everything by the book and ask people what should be done, you'll be fine.
Basically:
It plays roms, regions free and online.
It can install roms, DLC, updates, themes, etc in the 3DS by using devmenu/bigbluemenu.
It can run homebrew.
It supports emunand (copy of original system) in 4.x support. It might in the new support.
And there's more stuff appearing "unofficially" every day released by other people that either doesn't need a flashcart or it uses one with the flexibility of Gateway.
You're also pretty much almost assured that you probably won't ever have to buy another flashcart again too since Gateway always trying to work and improve on the only card they released instead of releasing new ones in any new revision.

Another question I've been meaning to ask, but I forgot to mention in the first post. It may sound stupid, but I can never be too sure.

I currently have legit games and themes on my sysNAND, I've seen what you have to do to set up the gateway. Shove files into an SD card, a micro SD for blue card, and another micro SD for red card. But can I still add those files to an SD card with my 3DS data already in it?

You will need an SD card in the 3DS itself to operate emuNAND and have your 3DS's eShop data on it, so no, you can't use your current SD card for the red card. (But whether or not data is on it is irrelevant).


Assuming you won't be using your 3DS to run DS mode software (or run DS games, which I would recommend against), you only need the blue card one single time, so you don't have to dedicate a microSD to it.


Bear in mind the above information is in regards to 4.X Gateway. When 9.2 is released, the information may change or become outdated (for all we know, the blue card may not be needed at all).

I was operating under the assumption that you were going to use the 3DS's native SD card, take it out, and put it in your red card. (I'm running on the assumption that you have an MicroSD card with an SD adapter).

By existing data, I assume you to mean eShop purchases? At the time of emuNAND creation, you clone the system's NAND. All the data on there should work on both to my knowledge up to that point.

In any case, your eShop data up to this point should be fine. As long as you have over a GB free on your system's SD card, you can make emuNAND.

good one, I red it in #3dsdev so I believe it (although i cant read ARM code myself so i can't confirm it. I also thought there was a guy who bricked his 3ds after messing with a 2.6 launcher.

anyway i will look if it is in the log file from #3dsdev tomorrow.

i think the most worthy part of getting one 3ds flashcard is, play latest 3D games smoothly and freely, then gateway 3ds can be said a good choice at the moment, or even the best if they release the 9.2 support

Shipping costs are very high in my country and I will probably need to pay for duties when I get the item back also.. end of day it might costs me more than the gateway itself just to ship it and pay for duties when it gets back...
