This has probably been beaten to death, but I cannot find an answer.

Anyway, when I eventually buy a Gateway, I already have two 8GB Kingstons I'm gonna use for the Red & Blue cards. I'm wondering if I'd need a bigger SD though. I have an original 3DS I got back in 2011 that came with a 2GB Toshiba SD card, and I didn't bother to change it.

Would a 2GB SD be enough for this?

I suggest getting a 16gb lexar sd card. They aren't very expensive, and 2gb is not enough if you plan on installing CIA files with gateway.

The 3DS's internal SD card is just for Gateway launcher and your save game files. Theses are tiny and the original 2GB card will do fine. The NAND is also saved here but it should have plenty of room for it as well.

Yea the two Kingstons are MicroSDs obviously.

I'm still pretty noobish with this. I've heard of .cias but I'm not entirely sure what they are or what they do. Nor do I really care for homebrew all that much.

cia files are just like 3ds files. they just install to the systems sd card and show up on emunand as an installed game so you wont have to load up every rom on your 8gb

I got a 32 gb micro sd card for 3ds games because I like to have lots of options available without swapping roms. 8 gb micros are fine, but just know most games are .5gb to 2gb and some are 4gb if you don't trim the roms. I never trimmed my roms just because I didn't have to. Most of the staples are 1 to 2gb like pokemon kingdom hearts fantasy life animal crossing kirby most mario games etc. So at most you can have like 8-16 high quality games, and at worst 2 4gb games, but those are rare like donkey kong i think. You are already saving so much money not buying the games. I would suggest getting a 32gb class 10, or at least 16 gb for convenience. The sd card is fine at 2gb but I would at least get 4gb there I'd say to just have more than enough space. If you do plan to have .cia installed I'd go bigger. Personally I keep everything on my microsd cards so I can't offer much advice there. I just feel like installing .cia and everything is more work than it is worth if you have a big micro sd card. .cia is important for dlc and updates though so 4gb might be a good baseline to work with if you have the option but I think most dlc is small enough that a 2gb would work.

You can turn 2gb games to like 1gb I think. I have never used it.

Edit: I think most DS games are less than 1 gb. .5gb or less is very common if i remember. 8gb would be more than enough for those if I remember correctly.

Get an adapter for one of your micro SDs and stick that in your 3DS.

The blue card is completely useless; you can't use it at all unless you're still on system version 4.5. It's blocked since version 6 I beleive.

I'm not sure whether 8GB is enough, but it's a good place to start. You can always upgrade later.
The biggest ROMs thus far are 4GB; Pokemon is 2GB, and Smash Bros. is at least that, probably more.

EmuNAND takes up just under a gigabyte so that's half your Toshiba gone.

yeah plus smash bros for example won't work if your using a 2GB SD, you need 4GB or more or it won't boot (never actually heard the reasoning behind that).....but yeah you should probably just use the other 8GB for the 3DS rather than the blue card to avoid any issues down the line

4 Gb for big SD card is ok for just saving feature + emuNAND.
If you get onto .CIA, just consider 16 GB card as they're not expensive now.

For microSD, as said above, with a 8 Gb card you will have 4 or 5 games at max and not big ones.
Try to buy a 32 Gb microSD, better at class 10 (number in a circle on microSD = theorical speed reading, greater = better).

Blue linker is a R4 to launch DS game (and 3DS exploit).
If you plan to play DS games, 8 Gb will be enough.
And if your 3DS is above 4.5, don't worry about the blue linker : it is nor working :D unless GW team releases an upgrade... if possible.
