What I mean is, in the long run, will it be needed? There's not that many homebrew for the 3DS right now and I don't know if the exploit will remove the region lock. I also like to buy games from the eShop so not updating my system will be bad for me.

It's all optional, really. I already have my own way to play pirated 3DS games on newest firmware, so it's nothing that I really need.

Right now your choices are a 4.5 3ds with cfw OR gateway, or Cubic Ninja with Ninjhax.

In the long run? Nobody knows. An exploit of some type will almost always be necessary, unless nintendo grows a heart and decides to allow homebrew(which will never happen).
As has been said countless times, finding exploits is extreamly hard, and considering with the 3ds it seems to always be a chain of exploits needed, around the time the next generation of handhelds comes out, most of the focus will likely end up with the new generation.
Threads like this are kind of pointless because nobody can predict the future accurately.

tl;dr nobody knows. Choose either eshop or homebrew, but as of right now(and 9.3), you can't have both. I have 2 3ds systems for this very reason.

exactly. There's not a lot of homebrew now, but once we get more hardware abstraction api's, more people will develop.
Actually. its not really that difficult to develop for the 3DS. All you need to have is Level two skills in either C++ or C and a IRC client to access #3dsdev :)

No, it's not. but nobody wants to deal with the quirks of the pica2000.

It reminds me of the old phantasy online exploit for the game cube...never really went anywhere.

What do you mean it never went anywhere? It was amazing for the time. You could stream game ISOs from your computer to the Gamecube and play backups. Or you could rip your own collection of games. You could run homebrew and all sorts of things. It opened up homebrew for the GC without any system modding.

It depends on what you want. Most of the functionality I like in a handheld I have between DS homebrew and the 3DS's built in software. It's not as ideal as I like, but when 3DS homebrew gets to the point where that software is better, then I'll worry about it then. Until then, I'm perfectly content with DS homebrew.

I'm personally staying on 9.2.0 for ninjhax and gateway. I went ahead and ordered gateway because once they release their exploit I will have two options to play with. I had no interest in it until they pulled the 9.2.0 announcement and Im already playing snes games on my 3ds and that is the main reason I'm using ninjhax. Hopefully I will be able to play my smrpg soon ;]

Wasn't Cubic ninja the only exploit that was discovered and usable with current fimware when it came out? Homebrew wasn't practical up until that point and that was why it was so significant.

Ninjhax seems to be preferred over gateway when it comes to developers too.

What really allows proper homebrew development is ctrulib, which is mostly developed by Ninjhax's author.
Ninjhax itself has nothing to do with homebrew development, other than being a silly way to run it.

Your post doesn't really match the question in the topic title.

It is necessary because it remains the only method of loading .3dsx files, it the only method of loading homebrew without relying on flashcarts, and serves to give more developers access to homebrew-capable consoles. It also removes homebrew's reliance on one flashcard developer, which is important.

Whether or not the currently-available homebrew is more valuable to you than accessing the eShop etc. is really a different question.
